The local council recommend bumdealnappies (what an unfortunate name) so I will try some of those and some old fashioned ones. They don't provide subsidy or help like some councils do but ten nappies for £50 sounds affordable rather than the £260 they r asking for state of art posh ones!

I think a baby would prefer soft Terry Towelling on its bum rather than a tissue paper and cat litter sandwich

I know nothing about nappies or cleaning them.

Re Sudacreme:- I know little about that either but if it's no longer recommended then have a look at Diprobase Emollient Cream. Check with you surgery about any of those type of products.

Just a technical warning about smoking:-
I'm not going into whether a mother or prospective mother should smoke or not as that has been all over the news recently.
If you are using any form of emollient cream you need to be aware that it's flammable - not highly flammable, but any material that has become impregnated with that type of cream is, then, more flammable. So glowing ash dropped on it is a no no.

It's not a prob shiny as I finally managed to stop a week ago today using nrt and vape ing. :)) I wouldn't smoke around my kids anyway lol

I'm honest it was hard but worth it. The midwives are delighted. Off to my weekly round of appointments tests and scans in a min. I will ask the midwives if they know of any reusable nappy schemes :)

No doubt they will take great joy in telling me the boy is measuring three weeks ahead and is going to be at least 9lbs - insert scream smiley here lol

Terry nappies are built for endurance too though: I'm still using the remnants of terry cloth nappies I used on my first child (dusters etc) .... 35yrs ago :heehee: And no, they didn't shrink, they were ripped into squares for the rag bag. Hmm, wonder how long they take to break down? :dunno:

I'm also now wondering .... where else did people dispose of terry cloths but ... into landfill? :dunno: (Admittedly, some of mine were given 2nd hand, but .... )

And, thinking a bit deeper, don't we still find "remains" from centuries ago still wearing cloth? :dunno:

Might weaken the "500yrs to break down" argument a bit?

not really as you also have the volume of dispo nappies to consider .. an average baby uses between 2,200----2,900 per year, so average that as 2,500 over 3 years that is a staggering 7,500 nappies in landfill PER CHILD
i bought 25 toweling nappies when my first one born ( i had four in total and never needed to buy more ) so if we use that as a Vague guide that is 300 children to uses 7,500 toweling nappies

1 child uses approx 7,500 disposable
300 children use 7,500 Real nappies
and that is if you allocate 30 real nappies per 1 child as i said i had 4 children so that would alter these figures vastly,
so 300 children would use 2250,000 disposable nappies :hate-shocked:

i dont think this weakens the argument at all

also i recall my father adding rags of toweling to the compost bins it may have taken a why but i am sure they would have broken down or he would have just burnt them

Not sure I understand your maths? :dunno:

Besides, I didn't say it made the argument null and void, merely that it weakens/dilutes it - not equates to it.

Go for it! When mine were in nappies I didn't really know about reusables just pampers but now I live with the environmental guilt of that! Soaking helps from my experience of soiled pants and a friend bought second hand modern ones n boiled them to sterilize before use. Made it much cheaper.
