Oh there is so much going on in this
First a reminder to Wee Eck Salmonela, re our Trident sub base, he may just find his Indy Scotland annexed :-)

Russia tonight at 18:04 stated to Ukraine if not amicably sorted by 06:00 in the morning he is taking it :-(

Recruitment has been very strong up here on TV and Radio for about three weeks for all three services

It is the TA I feel sorry for, Yes it is nice to have a job in civy street, and great fun PLAYING at soldiers and sailors on a weekend, additionally two full weeks a year fun in the sun and loads of money (also knowing that at any minute after an order you can just jack it in, that makes a big difference to the mind set)
In reality which it may soon be, it is hell

Russia use more live ammunition on a weekend exercise than the British do in two years (We aint got none, If you read up or have an interest, our warships are "fitted for" NOT "fitted with)

I really hope it cools down

    Jack McH

Putin has now denied that his armed forces have given an ultimatum to the Ukranian armed forces in The Crimea!

Hmmm, Turkey. Who will they side with? China seems to have inordinate amounts of influence over their decisions but we need control of the Bosporous and airbases. China naturally back Russia. Russia is acting innocent saying they were invited to do this by the valid leader (now ousted by his government)... Rhetoric from everywhere else but little action being visible.

Can't see Ukraine keeping Crimea but Russia need to pull back swiftly to avoid a nasty turn. It's a shame that Putin seems, to me, to be hell bent on rebuilding the Soviet empire and is a powermonger. You can see the bloodlust there, no doubt about it.

I wonder if we could use all this as a valid excuse to bin NATO and the UN? Stop all this inaction and vetoing going on

Won't that render it temporarily worthless as we won't need to pay for what we aren't getting? I wonder how much Putin needs the money?

Interestingly a lot of Russian big investors keep their cash here, presumably for a reason. If Russia keep dirtying their noses then I can see their financial situation going from bad to worse as foreign investment in their country will evaporate due to the uncertainty.

Yes, I can only hope he continues to not rush into wars like Bush (and Blair) did with Iraq.

I've been watching the news and reading up on this, and granted I can only go off published information, but I have a new take on this now.

Putin has said he doesn't want war, and will only order military action as a last resort. I find it particularly interesting that he's said that publicly.

He also pointed out, rightly, that the last president of Ukraine that was ousted, was not ousted legally. Putin says that there are only three legal ways to get rid of the president. Either the president has to die, be voted out in a legal election, or impeached (not sure what that means). The last chap was forced out by a violent mob. Putin says so, but in fairness, so does our media, the same media that portrays Russia as out of line.

The majority of the people in Crimea, where Russian forces are allegedly in position, are Russian, and having seen how the Ukrainian people were so quick to resort to extreme violence to get their way, and those people are now spurred on by their recent victory, is it so wrong for Russia to express grave concerns for the safety of Russian people in Ukrainian territory?

I'm not saying that Putin is a good lad. I think he's a dangerous nutter, but in this one instance, I'm not convinced he is in the wrong.
