Using a pencil on the rotating-shaft might help too - i.e. adding graphite as a lubricant. Don't get it elsewhere though, as it conducts of course.

When I don't have mains electricity for charging I use a 12v cigarette lighter charger (got them for laptop, tablet, phones, headtorch, battery charger, mifi, etc.). My chargers work when the ignition isn't on so they can be discretely charging from the rear socket even if the car's parked. I've also got an inverter for the car (use that for camera battery chargers and anything else I haven't got a car charger for), plus a generator for more out of the way locations.

An android tablet would use far less power and charge quicker in the car (as would a mifi). I'm fairly certain the one below can be connected to a TV (portable with 12v option) when using the likes of iPlayer (dunno about TV licence implications).

It may be able to do the same with a cheapo flatscreen monitor and avoid licence implications. I do wonder about chucking out all the TV's and just using iPlayer and monitors.

I've still got my old 12v vehicle rooftop travelling aerial/amplifier setup, but haven't tried it since TV went digital as we'd now also need a 12v freeview box and it's easier to use mobile wifi.

An android phone used as a mobile hotspot would still require laptop charging. There's always solar panel laptop chargers

Ta everyone, and ta Scrungee :)

I'll have to look into that, know nothing about android tablets, but that might be a better idea.

Can you stream video on them when you're away from a wifi signal?
