Hi folks, am I right in saying that it is a little too early to be planting sunflower seeds in little pots with children?
If it is, are their any easy to grow alternatives that are suited to potting about now?

Why would you want to plant children in little pots ?
I have just sown a few sunflower seeds in pots , should be ok.

Sunflower seed are fine to plant indoors now on a windowsill . Sow about 1/2" deep in multi purpose compost . They will germinate in 1 to 2 weeks , and can be planted outside middle of May.
Nasturtiums are good growers for kids as well:blue thumb:

Broad beans could be sown and placed outside now. Any large seed is easy for little fingers to handle. Children with a bit more manual dexterity can be trained to sprinkle a pinch of seed finely (6 years and up?) on a pot of compost. Children often find the idea of depth of compost & correctly filling the pot surprisingly difficult - but if they are your own you can help them out with that.

I see @HarryS has beat me too my favourite suggestion, nasturtium. They are so easy to grow. Nice big seeds that germine very easily with few demands, and the whole plant is edible, which is always a good thing when kids are getting in on it.

Also, how about peas? Again, easy enough, and all kids like pea pods.

Marrows are good fun as well , me and my brother would have competitions as kids who could grow the biggest , I also remember growing at School sunflowers/nasturtiums so still good old favorites.

Gourds. After the first time the kids insisted we grow them every year, and love & cherish their fruits, carefully piled up in a bowl until they rotted ... ugly critters too - although I expect that was a large part of their appeal :)
