I bought my Corylus [Hazel] Contorta several years ago and for various reasons I put it in a large 18" pot and then had difficulty in finding a spot where it would be happy as it didn't seem to like too much Sun. It's now next to my Lilac "Madame Lemoine", still in the pot, and seems quite happy in semi-shade. I liked the catkins that overwinter on the shrub and the scaled pattern of them.

However, when the catkin cases open and the true catkins burst out and you can get a close look at them it reminds me of a Butterfly bursting out of it's cocoon.

LK, the Sophora would normally grow faster but my one is in very sandy soil which dries out too rapidly to keep it going, it should have had double the amount of flowers too.

Thanks. I seem to be doing ok with Clianthus puniceus so maybe it's time to take the plunge.

BTW - as a man of the world, do you have any experience of Vestia foetida?

            Yes, it stinks!!!!!
No not really as I was given one (about 25 years ago) and planted it but moved a year or so later so I don't know how it faired, I think they are relatively hardy. Sophora would look better, if your choosing.

My Osmanthus just starting to bud up and flower. When it's in full flower and there's a warm wind you can smell the scents yards away, so I'm looking forward to that!!

Not sure what this is peeping out amongst the primulas, tiny but very pretty. Must start taking notes of what I plant and where.
