Actuallys I'm in a hotel in Macclesfield, eating near the bar at the moment. So in a manner of speaking I have fetched a bottle. ;0)

I'm a tad concerned that standard roses are being grown on their own roots and I didn't know! This is not a viable option unfortunately as many roses will not grow to 3' 6" which is the height of a full standard rose. Also growing a long stem of the varity required would almost certainly result in lack of vigour at the top end and probably a short lifespan. Now I'm not saying its not possible but. . . . In Bakersfield California (where the own-root rose is king) I have seen grafted standards being created in their tens of thousands but never on their own roots. Here in the UK all the nurserymen that I know produce standard roses on, amongst other varieties, rugosa stems.
In fact I'm trying to think of anyone who commercially produces any roses on their own roots in the UK except for the micro-propagators who grow the supermarket and garage forecourt pot roses? Are we speaking at cross purposes Woo?
I'll be happy to post a thread, nearer budding time, showing everyone how easy it is to bud standards or any rose for that matter. Sorry to disagree, I may be wrong but I'll take some convincing. Don't forget Woo that many plant foods are organic. The good word from the rose world these days is; buy healthier new varieties, feed them well and the need for any chemicals (fungicides or pesticides) should be irradicated.
Growing as many bushes as I do,that is a real money saver.

But if nobody buys the older roses won't they die out?? Just a question as my knowledge is very limited?

Woo, I was in B&Q's garden section today and thought I'd be nosey and check out the Standard rose prices. I found your rose 'Orange Dreamer' and the price was nearly £25.00! Okay, I take on board (excuse the pun) that we have shipping costs to the island but the price here compared to yours is definitely marked up!

                Old roses? New Roses?
When I advise people new to roses about buying a rose I would always advise them to look for a rosethat hasbeen bred in the last 10 - 15 years. This is because modern roses are, in the main bred for health. If by Old Roses you mean the roses classified as Old Garden Roses (OGRs) then obviously there is a place for them too. They tend to be less healthy, falling victim to black spot and mildew with equal ease! I would say that OGRs need more of a n expert hand on them but they are non the less beautiful in their own way. Modern roses that look like OGRs is probably a better option. Roses like the Austin type tend to be easier to grow thanmany of the old fashioned OGRs with the benefit of repeat flowering throughthe season. What I worry about is people who buy roses because of their name (favourite aunt or granny or whatever) Much better to make your decision based on the rose itself; that way it will give you years of pleasure with the knowledge that you planted it in someone or somethings memory.
Of course you may get lucky and find a good new rose with a name you like . . . . .

this one's called Joy. It grows 'for joy' and has won me many first prize cards at rose shows!

Good morning Sheal My apologies,I should have broken the price down for you,the standard roses are marked up at £25,but as I am of a certain age I always wait for Wednesdays when us more mature folk get 10% discount =£2 50p total price £22 50 it had two small broken canes on the rose so I negotiated with the manager and he said you can purchase it for £17 98p:smile:
