    Hi

I planted onion sets and garlic bulbs last October, when should I harvest them? Also, how do I know when the beetroot and Kale is ready?

    Thanks :-)

    Morning
Onion sets and garlic planted last autumn should be harvested this summer. The onion leaves should fall over and go brown. There is no reason why you can't use onions as soon as there big enough. Pinch off any flowers that form. Garlic leaves also go brown and dry off some varieties fall over some don't.
Beetroot sow about now and it is ready when the beets can be seen, use at whatever size you like from baby beet to good sized. In most winters beetroot will stand outside in the ground alright and can be used in soup and stews.
Kale depends on the variety but they are ready about now. I sow Cavolo Nero in the late spring plant out and then use the leaves over the winter and have just taken up last years plants.
    Nigel

How did you cook it Yvonne?
I've only really used Kale to feed to my hens, but, I did try cooking some as "Chinese Seaweed" once - yes it was ok, but I'm not so sure it was *that* healthy, hence the question :)

I blanched it for a minute in boiling water and then stirred it in with some fried red onion. Yum!
