What Jobs are we doing in the Garden today 2014..

It's brightened up here too, nice and sunny outside.

I walked the mutts then spent the morning doing the front garden. Dug up several plants, dug over two borders, trimmed the lawn edges with hand shears and then mowed the lawn (I use the term loosely 'cos it's mostly moss). Also gave the plants some slow release fertiliser. Oh yes, and pulled up a zillion Sycamore seedlings

Still lots more to do out there but at least it's looking tidy.

Daren't touch the back lawn at the moment, it's unbelievably soggy still.

 

Confession:
went to friends' house this morning and just sat there in the sun drinking coffee and eating eccles cakes
then
came home, snapped off a few dead branches from pots - decided it was tooooo nice to work so,
I got my lovely nursing chair out on the patio and sat there in that lovely sunshine and knitted 2 adult and 4 junior mouslings for the tea cosy. Just got the sheaves of corn to make in the morning. Hope the sun shines again tomorrow - it was bloomin 'andsome,

Sowed some beetroot and fennel in the veg plot.

Found one of my pots of Arctic King lettuce which had overwintered in the greenhouse was full of greenfly, so I gave it to the chickens.

Spent the rest of the day working my way through weeding and edging the herbaceous bed. I paid particular attention to a few small patches of that annoying little weed bittercress, meticulously getting rid of every single one.
At least I got them all before they went 'ping' this year.

While I was doing all this, Mrs. Trunky was busy painting the new summer house. A productive and enjoyable day in the sunshine.

 

Turned my heap,planted my new Roses that were delivered this morning,mixed compost and manure for my strawberries ,planted my spuds,glanced in the GH to check all the seeds were behaving,they'll keep while tomorrow,did a bit of weeding and faffing...poured myself a Scotch and sat in the sun....

 

I spent today catching up with the seedlings that needed potting on in the greenhouse. Sorted out the best of the tomato seedlings as well and potted those on. I always feel mean committing seedlings to the compost but I haven't got room for them all. I've also stuck to the promise I made myself at the beginning of last year, washing the pots and trays as I've finished using them so I don't have a mammoth task later in the year.

 

Had a trawl through the hugger-mugger stuff in the greenhouse, and sorted out a dozen of more plants that are good enough to plant out

Quite a few Delphiniums, grown from seed last year, a bunch of Eucalyptus (ditto - from seed) and ... can't remember the rest!

There are loads of Hydrangeas, from cuttings last year, but I think I will wait until they are in flower so I can position them according to colour.

 

Today I'm going to do more in the front garden. I need to make a semi circle in the corner of two borders and remove the turf so I can put an Acer in.

Once that's done I'll plant out a deciduous Azalea, a couple of Peonies and the Acer. I am also going to mix some compost into the borders I dug over yesterday and sprinkle some seeds.

Also need to take up some of the Dahlia tubers in containers which were left out over winter. If they are okay I'll put them in the front garden too.

 

Hopefully ... if I've judged it right?!! ... the Hydrangea Walk will be a gradual colour gradation from white at the near end, through pink to red at the far end. I thought I'd have a go at forcing some blue ones in the bit beyond the end. Time will tell
