The only way to describe it is, it's like a small piece of wood with legs and always painted white.
Does anyone know what it was called ? or better still, do you have a photo ?

Nope. It's a white painted 3 x 3" piece of wood about 12" long with dowel rods poked through intermittently on all sides.

      Someone must know.

Portable storage device used by itinerant dowel rod makers in order to keep their dowel rods off damp lawns.

Here's two pics found today of the item. These used to be very popular in the 60s and 70s.

No idea, JWK. People used to have 2 or 3 at the edge of their lawns. They were always painted bright white. (The one pictured could do with a lick of paint.) Never knew what their purpose was. Haven't seen them for years until someone mentioned it recently.

The other thing you used to see were Staddle Stones at the edges of drives.

I wonder if it was some kind of measuring tool for spacing plants from the edge of lawns ,you know how they used to have regimented bedding displays back then and it was maybe used as a guide:dunno:....

Could it possibly be something for positioning the hosepipe, there would have been no sprinklers then.

The staddle stones were/are just used as ornaments as their original use is no longer necessary. I still see plenty of them at edges of driveways and they're to keep vehicles from going on the grass.
