I'm interested in a greenhouse that's a good size for me but has panes around 720x730, not the more usual 600mm size. Having searched, I can't find any supplier offering this size, although 730x1422 is apparently standard. The greenhouse is around 7' square which is a rare size, can anyone shed any light on the matter? I'm slightly concerned about the cost of finding replacement panes, especially if I choose toughened glass. I'm bound to break a few during the move.

Try a glazier Madahhlia as they will cut it to size for you. I had to replace toughened glass in my greenhouse two years ago and I found them to be reasonably priced.

I got some cut to size from a glass company in Yellow Pages a few years ago, I didn't bother asking how much it would be as it was only a few panes, but when I picked them up it was much more expensive than I was expecting.

Glass ain't cheap! Best price / service I found recently has been glassmaster services (@JWK ) but do shop about.

When moving the glass be extra careful, obviously, and hope you don;t break any!

That's what I was afraid of! If you have standard sizes it's much easier to pick up 2nd hand bargains. A pane of 3mm acrylic sheeting is only around £15 so that's not too bad if the worst comes to the worst. I'd rather have safety glass ideally.

Do you have children around who would come into contact with the greenhouse? If not, standard glass from a glazier would be much cheaper than toughened glass. I must say though that I would only advise installing it in a "child free" environment.

My environment is child and pet-free, but it's not me-free.

I would have infinitely preferred a safety glass greenhouse but there are far fewer about 2nd hand so I'm looking at ways of making the most exposed horticultural glass safer. e.g.

        Putting on sticky back film
        Avoiding trip hazards
        Using brushwood fencing
        Diverting paths
Replacing key panes with toughened/acrylic panes etc etc

Yes, always best to phone several glass suppliers, not necessarily glaziers.

I found, for my standard 24 x 24 panes, the price varied from £3-30 to £4-99. The price for cutting too varied, as I also need a couple of triangular pieces.

I actually had thought about getting myself a glass cutter from ebay, less than £2 delivered, as a couple of the broken panes, would have been OK cut down to fit other places, where smaller panes are required, eg the two louvre panes. In the end I didn't bother and just got all the glass from a single supplier.

Yes, I certainly don't fancy the job of cutting glass, had to do it at college when I did my glass design course.

I saw on Gumtree yesterday someone advertising that they do all greenhouse glass sizes. Might be worth a look?

I paid £5 for each pane of toughened glass that was cut to size for me. :)

That seems extremely reasonable. Worth making a trip to the Isle of Man for!

Interesting, the panes I have are about 7200 square, I think. Those Dutch lights would be a bit of a pig to transport and handle being double that, the small panes are bad enough!
