Next door neighbour is end of terrace. Below I have attached a picture that is on the other side of the neighbours fence so this I assume stands on council property. It is huge. It might not look it from the picture but it must be a least just under 2 houses high.

Do you think this us safe. For some reason ive often thought if that falls down that could really hurt someone and it would easy cover my neighbours garden, mine and my other neighbour as it is so tall.

Do you think I should report it or am I being a silly busy body?

    Opinions welcome. 20140405_154702.jpg

As my forum name states I like trees , but I can understand your concern with it being so tall and with the awful wet winter we have had a lot of trees across the UK have fallen which has added to people worrying more than normal , but if the tree looks safe ie no broken branches ? and doesn't look diseased ?, I cant see why it should be removed and you should embrace the beauty it brings to your area you live in.

To be honest with you, motorists driving using mobile phones is more hazardous than a tree.

I wouldnt want it removed as you say there is nothing wrong with it and trees are good for us. What I really wanted was the top bit cut a little. If I was to make them aware do you think they would remove it then instead or could I just request s bit taken off? Its a good tree and a go to for the birds when the neighbours cats are about so I will not bother if they would just remove it. What do you think?

If its on council property, I think any advice about whether its safe or not, or should get a haircut, is probably irrelevant in all honesty, as the council wont do anything anyway unless you can get it officially declared to be a hazard.

I reported a huge willow tree in our local park that has moved so much its bust its way through a fence that was previously a good 2 or 3 foot away from the tree. Another willow tree of similar size and age has already fallen, luckily into the lake but the one I reported is leaning precariously across one of the main paths. After about a week, the council acknowledged my report and said the tree surgeon would look at it when he got chance. A few weeks after that I was in the park again and was pleased to see from a distance that a big notice had been stuck to it. But, when I got closer, the notice was not warning of the hazard, or telling the tree surgeon to look at it on his rounds, it was advertising a fun run around the park, with the route passing under said tree:doh:

I cant see your Local Council paying for it to be trimmed or removed , with all the budgets cuts they have had, as they may cut that one and end up with numerous requests form your locality , from your photo its already starting to branch out from the main trunk already so it may get a little higher.

I think if that was done it make the tree look odd ,

You would have to find out also it may have a tree preservation order on it as well, I hope it does.

        I think it looks great

ps as you can see from the agrees I have had, but you did ask opinions

I don't understand why you think the local council will touch it just because you want a bit cut off it! I also hope it's got a tree preservation order on it! Maybe you should have picked a different house that's not so near to a tall tree if you can't deal with it......well you did ask for opinions. :)

Yes I did and thank you for your opinion I do appreciate it spruce.

Thank you clueless 1, I dont think I would want it deemed as hazardous as the other neighbour had 5 cats and the birds and squirrels use it as a go to.

I think I will just leave it as being that big the roots must be strong I imagine so hopefully the chances of it falling down are slim.

          Thank you all

Thank you fern. I think what maybe I was really trying to ask in my weird way is if it is safe for a tree to be that tall as if it was to fall in any either direction than one it would be falling into a house.

Our council has lopped many large trees in the last couple of years, its a health and safety thing so money is no object,
They do look awful for a few years once topped, but tend to fit in again after a while.

I have a Sycamore tree outside my home and it is twice as high, some years ago we got in touch with our local council to see if anything could be done to reduce it.NO was the reply. After a while we had a word with our county council rep. who came to see us.Brought a chap from the county office as it was their problem.sorry we can't touch it as it is not causing any problems.Say's I but it does when the wind is blowing as it makes an awfull noise with is creaking branches when it's windy,as it was windy that day (lucky for us)He stepped outside,Ah yes he said two branches are rubbing together,we can trim the offending branches but we can't cut down the tree.We don.t want the tree chopped down as we like to see the birds etc. Two week s later branches trimmed and piece returned .:yes::ThankYou::ThankYou: we said.

First and foremost, I do not think *any* query on a gardening forum could be deemed "silly" (well, ok, maybe targeting a query for an Ebay market regarding homemade chutney might well result in a thread topic move .. but nothing more serious ;) )

Secondly: if you *feel* it is of concern and potential danger, then, yes! Why not broach it with your local council? :noidea: Register your concern. They may (or may not) agree with your concern, but, at least you have made it a point of local concern. Fast forward 5/10yrs and it has grown ferociously and you are now very, very, very much concerned: you have your email of the day (today?) recorded and a matter of evidence to draw upon.

Council's do not have the power of foresight: on that basis alone I would be making enquires, costing the local businesses and digging my heals in by harnessing this as an opportunity for a spot of haggling ;)

Best of British luck to you! :grphg:

No its not Birch , the point I was making not all trees can cope or look ok if pruned , Birch trees being a good example as when they have had the main trunk cut close to the top they never look right.
