This church that those against seem to be defending, would that be the same church that until very recently would shame women who gave birth outside of wedlock to the extent that many gave away their own kids to be raised by an older, married family member? (I know someone personally who were party to this)

Is it the same church that teaches that children are born sinners and will remain condemned until they are 'cleared of sin' by baptism?

Is it the same church that hardly anyone bothers with unless its a last resort to win an argument? Its like the anti-Muslim thing. When there's nowt much going on, the majority seem to say they are atheist, but when a Muslim is in the news, those same people will point out that this is a Christian country.

I have no wish to offend anyone, religious or otherwise, but the church has broke its own rules so many times throughout history that it may as well not actually have any rules at all. The church has its place. It brings its people together with a common interest and common faith, and for that, it is a most excellent thing, but as it keeps bending and changing its own rules to suit what the masses are thinking, I can't see how they can maintain any credibility at all while discriminating against an entire, innocent, section of society.

Fair point - I sort of do give a monkeys about the debate, but what people do behind closed doors is up to them.

I do find it amusing that the "christians" are claiming the institute of marriage as their own :heehee:

              Also, what is gay talk?

I'm very sorry to be disagreeing with you, Val , but that's also incorrect (not going into detail here).

I don't disagree :blue thumb: but only from the point of view of 'compulsion'. I think that a minister of faith should be able to make the decision whether to marry a couple. This has always been the case with a heterosexual couple and should remain so with any couple.

I think it should be down to the minister's own beliefs but constrained by the superiors of his own church. I know of two cases in the past (both members of my staff) who were refused permission by their vicar because they hadn't attended church often enough. A similar reason has also been used against baptising a child. Although I don't agree with this as it's visiting the 'sin' of the parents upon the child and doesn't give the child a chance.
