So....I'm looking for a climber(s) for an east facing fence. The place I want to put them is in the side passage between two houses so there will be less than 4hrs of direct sunlight a day. I was looking at C. Alpina and C. Macropetala but I don't know if they could cope with a lot of shade. They would also have to be planted in big containers.

Ideally I don't want a plant that will just limp along, I want it to do well.

Are there any other climbers that would be suited to these conditions or am I on the right lines with C. Alpina and C. Macropetala?

I'm getting a bit fed up with the side passage as it's a bit boring compared to the rest of the garden!

There's some nice Honeysuckles that might suit that spot Fern:blue thumb:

Hi Fern, your on the right lines with C alpina and C macropetala. A other good one would be any of C koreana's are C chiisanensis 'love child'.
Have a look on Clematis on the Web.
Will try and post a few pictures of my clematis later

A climbing Hydrangea perhaps, they tolerate shade.

That's lovely. :blue thumb: I've just googled it as well. One site said it was an Alpina and the other said it was a Macropetala!
