Hi, new to the forums - I've recently had my grass cut & that made my grass look patchy, as you can see in the, Ive tried repairing it however its proving unsuccessful.

I've dumped a bag of top soil on the grass and raked it over the patches, sprinkled grass seed over it & then teased it with the rake even more and then compacted the soil.

The area is in a shaded spot so sunlight is limited.

has anyone got any tips for me? Im a complete beginner but eager to learn!!

Pictures of the area & what i've used so far below:

EDIT: i bought the lawn food today and sprinkled a lot of that over half of my lawn to see if that would do any good.

Speaking to my mum earlier, she was telling me that its still quite cold up there at the moment, so I suspect that its a wee tad early for grass seed to really get going just yet?

The soil where you are is generally quite fertile, but it does tend to have quite a clay-like consistency about it, and I suspect that is also part of your problem, in that there is not enough air and drainage for the roots.

Take a look at this video, which explains things better than I can:

Looks like a nice rich dark soil to me. I'd just over seed and give it a few weeks. When you mow the existing grass, keep the mower on its highest cutting height for a while to give the new seeds chance to get up.

Yeah it is still quite cold, 4 degrees this morning - lower during the night as had to defrost the car !!

I will give it a couple of weeks & see what happens

If its still that chilly, I'd hold off for now on any thoughts of over seeding, and probably also delay most other action until the grass is ready to start putting on new growth again.

Grass seeds needs a temp of around 10 degrees C to germinate, so if you sow while its still averaging 4 degrees, it will just sit there until the birdies have it.
