I read somewhere (probably T&M site, if you are looking for it ...) that their biggest problem was sorting out so that the rootstock shoot was the same diameter as the scion.

Wouldn't it be easier just to pay the £15 for a plant from T&M and then keep the tubers to plant the following year? :heehee:

At the very least, all joking apart, they would give you the right rootstock.

No idea what the scion is, but they talk about very high Brix level (although maybe its a normal level for varieties like Sungold, and probably even Gardeners Delight, so maybe that's what they used)

If we are all off on a grafting jaunt (GC Challenge for 2014??) what might we try?

I'd like a Wisteria walk - I'm tempted by Wisteria floribunda 'Macrobotrys' because the racemes are so long - 4' apparently. Not sure if that would work for a pergola as you wouldn't be able to walk under it! so I though perhaps to train it along either side of a walkway, so you walked between "walls" of racemes. I've got a couple of plants (bought in the sale last year), which I could use for Scions. I wonder if I can get rootstock from somewhere? I presume they are just seed grown.

You got me thinking that £15 would probably save me several hours of work and probably a failed crop (missed season). Taking this low risk approach without saving my own potato seed, I'd have to spend £15 each year per plant :). So I'm going to experiment with my own varieties and also for another learning experience. Google found me a page about a NZ company who are also marketing a similar product to T&M:

      http://www.stuff.co.nz/nelson-mail/features/lifestyle/9218071/Potato-Tom-opens-fresh-doors

Gardeners Delight seems a good choice to me but the potato variety Agria is not listed on any UK supplier's website so I think I'll substitute Maris Piper for my trial.

Looks like we might have a 2014 Grafting thread then eh Kristen? :blue thumb:

It will be a case of getting the timings right for both to get a scion match which will be fun...worth a shot:dbgrtmb:

You've got to give it a go with the Wisteria Kristen:dancy:....

"The Garden" (Nov 2013) says "Amateur gardeners have been grafting them [Potatoes and Tomatoes] together for years" and that T&M's 15 years of development has been to get a means of grafting them affordably, including finding suitable varieties ...

So there ought to be a wealth of information out there about how the amateurs have been doing it for so long and what varieties they used, eh? :heehee:

The article also confirms that the Kiwis are using Gardeners Delight and Agria.

T&M are always looking for a selling point, climbing Fucshias, climbing Petunias, black plants that are really purple etc, nothing, in my experience of them is as advertised.
