When I have been in Greece or Turkey , there was nothing nicer than eating lunch under a pergola covered with grape vines . Maybe pushing it a bit even for balmy Essex .

Jungle jane they are just screwed together, when we looked at the price of wood and the time it would take to make it from scratch we figured that was quite cheap! But of course if you have the time, knowledge and tools i would imagine it would seem expensive :) ok been shopping and went for my two clematis and a climbing pink rose called generous gardener any tips on getting them up the pergola would be great :dbgrtmb:

I think I've read that somewhere too, but I can't say I've ever noticed it happen on any of mine. I have a couple of cultivated kids, and on my land I have loads of the native kind, aka woodbine. That's not to say it doesn't happen, just that I've never noticed it. It could be that it happens in more warmer climates perhaps, where extra sunshine results in more nectar being produced perhaps.

I must say that bodes well for the future considering the younger one is still in nappies, Clue! Are you reading them Crime and Punishment for their bedtime stories?

No problem Harry, grapes will certainly be hardy in the soft South, and will be willing to cover a good-sized pergola once it gets going.

Yes. It grows but without much enthusiasm, and tends to get a bit of black spot. Quite pleasant when it flowers without ever looking stunning. Damned with faint praise, in other words!
