Canon lenses

I think a lot depends on what you are expecting to use it for / see in it. Be interested to know what you think, once you've seen through on in-the-flesh.

It can't be as bad as I imply as I can see all the menu options through the viewfinder, and they only come up on "part" of the screen.

I don't know much about that, and have been amazed at the detail of the photos I have seen - which I assume is largely down to lens quality. Can't argue with being able to zoom in without having to change lens - before the animal/bird has taken flight! I took the predecessor SX30 on Safari a couple of years ago and whilst everyone else was faffing about changing lenses I had caught the shot ... But I do think that my zoomed-in bird shots are not as "sharp" as the ones that folk with SLRs took.

Here's one, picked at random, that I reckon was on full zoom (but the previous Canon camera, so 30x rather than 50x I expect). First is full-frame reduced to 70%, second is cropped to 800 x 600 px, and saved at 100%. It was Africa, so light would have been "strong"

Thank you everyone for weighing up these cameras with and for me. Strongy has replied to me in the 'Wildlife' forum, he now only uses a bridge camera finding DSLR and lenses to bulky to carry around.

My next move is to visit the photography shop here on the island on Tuesday. I think that will finally make my mind up either way regarding the bridge cameras. Watch this space!

 

This is the cheapest I can get it down to using the cashback deal and buying in the UK. About the same price as buying (importing) from Hong Kong, but it wont be a grey import and Boots give a 2 year UK warranty (not 1 year and pay to post it back to HK) which must be worth a few quid. Just had another look at the site Kristen. It says the warehouse is in Hong Kong, was your camera shipped from there?

Could also be 20% VAT, Customs charges (£10?) and DHL's admin charge (£7.50?) to pay, taking it up to £261.69 for a grey import that has to be returned to Hong Kong if anything goes wrong.

Some customers orders may slip through Customs' net, but when that happens I wouldn't expect them to post on a review site that they ordered goods from a .co.uk supplier and weren't charged VAT, duty, etc. when the parcel arrived. Beware of all positive reviews as it's been reported on review sites/forums that eglobal employ shills.

Personally I would never order from any company that uses DHL because twice (when I've been in the front room) they stopped outside my house and have walked up to door with a pre-written 'you were not in when we called card' and by the time I'd got to/opened the door they were driving off, leaving me with the expense of a 40 mile round trip to collect it from their depot.

My camera arrived next day, so I doubt it!

 

I made the visit to the shop, what a disappointment! They were waiting for stock to be delivered and by stock I mean everything! There were no more than five cameras there and not a 'bridge' amongst them. So if this is going to happen, it'll have to be bought 'blind' and on the internet. I now have to wait and see what my family decide to do, lens or camera and if camera which one. My other half is secretly playing the go between, well as far as our offspring are concerned.

 

@Sheal Amazon have today reduced price of Canon SX50 to £299 + are giving a further £25 discount at checkout + less £30 Canon discount! Price after discount and cashback = £244, possibly the lowest ever price it's been from an established UK seller.

Thanks for the info @Scrungee, I've had a look at the link to see how long the offer lasts for but I can't find anything. My birthday is a few weeks away and if you remember this is all down to my children, so I can only sit and wait now to see what they have decided to do.

 

Both discounts expire 7th May, or if out of stock before then. The price drop from £329 to £299 is not guaranteed to last until then. If (when!) this gets posted on a bargains website their stock could be snapped up.
