Here's my design, we were asked for a planting plan and an artist's impression. I struggled with the latter, I got the proportions of the trees wrong but ran out of time to re-draw them:

    Dimensions are 12 x 12 metres

Here's the brief explaining my concept:

My design celebrates the extraordinary achievements of Gertrude Jekyll the legendary plantswoman. She was a skilled craftswoman, an artist, writer, photographer as well as a prolific garden designer and nurserywoman.

She created many gardens near my home then, as her fame spread, commissions were taken throughout the UK and beyond. In a partnership with the renowned architect Edwin Lutyens they mixed formal classical landscaping softened by naturalist plantings. I have captured the essence of these features to showcase their relevance today.

My flower border uses Miss Jekyll’s innovative colour ideas, to “paint a beautiful picture with plants”. I have used generous drifts of her favourite plants in one of her bolder schemes. The wooded glade provides a counterpoint beloved by Miss Jekyll, which balances and compliments the garden as a whole.

Based on her talents as an artist and photographer, Miss Jekyll recommended viewing sections of her garden as individual pictures. Around my garden, static empty frames of various sizes and heights encourage visitors to experience her vision. (Comment: The empty picture frames are a bit of a gimmick but I thought I needed something wacky to stand a chance).

A ‘hidden’ view, visible at one point only, picks up the landscaping pattern to a shady monumental seat. This replicates the “Cenotaph” created in Miss Jekyll’s own garden, which in turn provided the inspiration for Sir Edwin Lutyens when he was asked by Lloyd George to design a monument to the fallen after Word War 1. No-one would connect the iconic Whitehall Cenotaph which is a very abstract and formal conception with a picturesque Surrey garden, but there is indeed a very strong association.

An uprooted silver birch symbolises the chaos that descended on the world exactly 100 years ago and red poppies hint of the Flanders fields. This quiet arbour under the weeping trees is a place for contemplation with glimpses of the flower border with its light and hope and order.

(Comment: I pinned a lot of hope on this linkage to WW1, what with 2014 being the centenary of the outbreak of WW1, and Miss Jekyll’s garden providing the inspiration for the iconic Whitehall Cenotaph).

      Details:

The cat on the bench is a nod to Miss Jekyll’s love of cats, she always had at least half a dozen following her around the garden or monopolising the best seats in her house. There are some lovely photos she took of them, all with charming names.

The art and crafts style bench was originally designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens.

The landscaping, Urn and steps are copied from Hestercombe in Somerset, one of the best Jekyll/Lutyens gardens.

The garden is stunning John, I only wish it had made it to fruition for you. I think you have captured Gertrude's thinking and it's a shame we are not going to see it in it's glory! I liked the idea of the fallen tree too. What would have been the dimensions of the garden please?

              Good question, it's 12m X 12m

I'll add that to the post above, cheers Sheal.

For once I wish that I had a TV license so that I could watch @JWK in action, the temptation was so strong... I nearly broke the law to watch it live on the computer. I'll watch it on iplayer this evening.

From the design and the concept behind it which you mentioned above, I think you did a brilliant job. The artist's impression part was tough, 2D plan drawing is one thing, putting it in 3D requires not just the garden plants and design knowledge but also some degree of artistic talent, personally I think what you achieved was well above the majority of us.

To be able to get into the final and only narrowly miss out on winning, what an achievement!!! Congratulations!!! :dbgrtmb:

Yes I did struggle with the 3D drawing, I learnt quite a lot. In the past I've planned my own garden using 2D. So for this competition I started with 2D and then tried to turn it into 3D. It took me a few failed attempts to realise that the flower border actually needs to be 3D first to get the colour combinations and heights right. It really made me stop and think that it needs an artists approach firstly, the 2D plan follows on afterwards and is merely a set of instructions on how to plant it up.

I found this very interesting and I got a couple of books out the library to try and learn the technique. It's not something that I easily picked up and I would need lots of practice or better still I would love to get myself on a garden design course just to understand these fundamentals.

Absolutely marvelous John:love30:....I'm definitely not alone at wanting your design to have been brought to life at Hampton Court show...It's designs and planting like yours that in my opinion is sadly getting lost amongst this obsession with hard landscaping and these 'structures' that keep appearing, just what is all that about:rolleyespink:....the plants and planting seem to take a back seat these days and I believe these 'modern day' plants men and women are losing their grip on the actual concept of a real garden. If it's a garden I want to walk round then that's what I expect , I'm aware every ones view of a garden is different but how many of these 'modern' ones will still give the same impact 100 + years on....I'm a huge fan of Miss Jekyll can you tell:biggrin:

Last to the party (hope no one noticed I was first out of the taxi - again!!)

Great effort mate, well done :)

I like the diagonal planting on your 2D sketch (although it looks more perpendicular on the 3D). Never thought to try that before, but I think diagonal planting in my herbaceous would hide / disguise plants further down the bed, and instead of planting "islands" of plants with heights low/medium/high from front-to-back of border, as is traditional, your design would create far more interest.

Sod Hampton Court I'll have a go at it here instead :)

(Slight snag that I have some more permanent planting in my Herbaceous already, but I'll nick some ideas at least, and tug my forelock when I plant-out the herbaceous in a few weeks time :) )

I have only just found time to catch up on iPlayer and I must say this:

What charmingly animated, friendly and sparkly eyes you have!!!! And it is those very same eyes which designed a garden I could actually see myself revelling in: most especially the glade! I'm not a lover of "city" gardens, so, I do suppose that makes me bias (?).

I felt so, so proud that it was our GC JWK who was able to identify 9/10: top job! (you put the others to shame ;)

All finalists deserved their place on the show: only one finalist deserves their place in my admiration (and in my heart of hearts!)......

                                Hiya John:)
Having had a look at your plan, I must say I find it so much more interesting than the other offerings. Don't get me wrong, I quite like modern designs, to a point. The big problem with modern designs (I think) is that they are quite static. Your design would have evolved as the season progressed, which for my money, is what makes gardening so interesting. I'm interested to know which trees you would have planted on the right?
                                Once again, well done John:dbgrtmb:
