    The hard drive on our old machine failed so we bought a new PC. It is Windows 7 as was the old one. Can I get it to work like that, can I heck. We had a program of Solitaire patiences which worked on the othere machine, won't work on this. I know I did something to get it to work, but after 5 years I forget what it was.
    Can I get the Spell checker to work? Can I heck.
    Very frustrating.

    I wonder if as is often the case you were sold the 64 bit version of Win 7 without being told. Though it may work a little faster with some software. I found some 75 % of my old 32 bit games no longer work. Hence I will keep an older PC running Win XP, but seldom use it on online as MS will not longer provide new protective updates. Besides I refuse to be forced to buy a new Printer and Scanner because mine no longer work on Win 7. In case you do not know you can download a free Win XP to Win 7 update advisor program from MS to check what will no longer work on your PC. Also if like me you keep some very old 8 bit DOS software and games you can still get much of it to work on Win XP or 7 etc using the clever free DOSBOX.

      Indeed we have now got Windows 7 ,64 bit version.
      The odd thing is that though the full program will not work. (It just tries to install instead of running) I have managed to get the Demo version working and that does every thing which the full one does. Having said that, it ought not work and I cannot remember how I did it either.

      So what did you do? Install a brand new OS on a new HDD?

      That comes ready loaded on the machine. The one we have has over 700 different Patiences on it.
      Nfrost, this is a completely new machine. We decided that we needed a better Graphics card and a faster interface so since any money we have is going to be taken away by the Gov't, we are spending it.

        Don't know if you've solved it yet, but Google brings up a load of Solitaire games, both downloadable and online playables, might be one or two you recognise?

        Thanks, but we tried a lot of those and they are not as playable as the version we have.

        I still find it very puzzling that we can use the program in Demo mode but not get to to run fully. In theory it should not work at all!

        I bet that when you installed the demo, the installer would have detected that it was on a 64 bit system, and installed the 64 bit version of all its libraries, while the other version is still attempting to use 32 bit libraries and failing. But, because usually demo versions are actually the full version but with bits disabled depending on encrypted config in the registry (no point maintaining two versions of the same app), because you installed the full version, that would have set a flag saying you'd bought a license for the full version, which the demo version will be reading, and enabling all the features.

        Clear as mud. Sorry.
        The program was written when 16 bit systems were in place. It is rather old, just like me.

        @Palustris

        Although a majority of 32 bit programs will work on 64 bit Windows, 16 bit programs will not work at all.
        Try the suggestion by @Sigord and give DOSBOX a go.
