    Hi all

So been living at this house for three months, first place ive lived with a garden and im really looking forward to making it nice.

Only problem is i have no idea what im doing, growing plants wise.
I am a carpenter by trade at least, so i have no problem building anything in the garden and have a garage chocked full of timber and building materials left over from jobs. Im currently putting together a large L shaped raised bed made from old floor joists around the perimeter.

So i signed up to get some good ideas and advice.

    Thanks for reading
    Gary

Hello Gary and welcome to the forum :)

It's a good idea to line the insides of a wooden raised bed with plastic (old compost bags or similar). It does a couple of things, stops moisture being drawn out of the bed/soil and will keep the wood drier and hence last longer.

        Thanks

Got a roll of DPM somewhere, that would be perfect. Its green too :) Will have to find it
        Thanks
This bit is easy... just digging and chopping. The whole "keeping plants alive" bit will be the bit i will need the help with.
Haha.... when i signed up, the verification question was "What tuber can you make chips from?"..... i had to google that.... then facepalmed when it returned the answer. I thought that "chips" was a gardening term.... food never occured to me at the time.

:spinning:Hello and welcome, you will like it here.

One of the first things I would do is get a sun map. By that I mean track the movement of the sun during the day, this way you will find the Sunniest and shadiest areas of you garden, do this for both front and back (if you have both), this will help in deciding which plants / veg to grow and where.

Raised beds are a great idea, used in combination with good growing medium and good placement you should be plenty successful.

Theres lots of great folks on here who can offer all the advice you will need.

          Best of luck.
