Having just read the thread about cucumbers, I'm not sure what to do with my cucumber seedlings. I sowed mine a few weeks ago and they are now showing signs of the first true leaves. I don't have a greenhouse so was going to get one of those tomato plastic mini greenhouse things (lol) and put them into grow bags. I have loads of fleece so would be happy to wrap them up at night. Do any expert cucumber growers know if that would be ok? Or should I just pot them on and keep them indoors....?
    Thanks

I grow mine on indoors until they threaten to take over, so looking at your pic I would leave them on the windowsill for another couple of weeks - I stand them in something & water from the bottom to get the roots going down.

Things should have warmed up enough by then for them to go outside, a blowaway will help them grow, just make sure you anchor it properly.

Mine are a little further on than yours, but they will remain on the windowsills for another couple of weeks to be honest, mainly until the night temperatures get a bit higher (that, and my greenhouse is a tad crowded :snork:) I am not convinced that a growbag is the right way to go to be honest - cucumbers are thirsty, hungry blighters and I would be concerned that a growbag would keep up with their demands; I put mine into pots (6 or 7 litre at a guess), and then train them up canes tying in as required. If you are short of space height wise, you might want to make a 3 or 4 cane 'wigwam' so you can zig-zag the vines up them rather than going straight up and running out of room.

If you are growing them in a blowaway, make sure you keep an eye on ventilation - cucumbers seem to be really prone to powdery mildew, and I would guess that too much humidity would be one of the triggers.

Fabulous... Thank you. I might try pots. I lost the packet but it did say that this variety was suitable for containers. Many thanks.

In my humble opinion this is excellent advice from Oxford Nick and Fat Controller.

One last thing - make sure they get watered regularly. I think I have lost three or four of mine today through lack of water. I was at work yesterday until quite late, Mrs C thought I had watered them, I thought she had watered them and when I went past them on the way to bed last night they looked pretty much fine (although there wasn't much light); got up this morning, to be faced with properly droopy looking wee things. I watered them immediately, but they haven't perked up any.

The only hope I have is that each one has a very small new leaf still developing and looking quite perky, so fingers crossed.

That's why it's a good idea to stand them in a container and keep watering from the bottom, mind you, you have to take care not to over water as well so you really can't win:scratch:

That's the embarrassing bit - the are in a container to be watered from the bottom, and still we let them go thirsty

Often they can look thirsty when acually they have been chilled.
They go limp and dont recover when watered.

Thanks @pete, but mine haven't recovered 14 hours after being watered - entirely my fault though

So they might not have been dry, as such, otherwise something would have perked up by now.

I think it could be as @Kristen has said before - cucumbers wake up each day trying to find a new way to die

RIP cucumbers lol. I bought a blow away and put in extra large grow bags, with extra 'pot-shaped' things for extra height, and my cucumbers were fine for about three days.... Then dead! They literally drooped, and passed on into cucumber heaven. Ha ha. They weren't dry...not too wet...not too sunny, nor too shady. Guess it just wasn't meant to be. On the positive, my tomato plants look good this year! However, the slugs and snails are eyeing them up nicely...

I am back in business with my cucumber! I gave one to someone at work who left it on a windowsill without water for a week. Having taken it back home, I nursed it back to health, pinched out the top and now have it in a big pot on the windowsill. So far, so good! It's got loads of flowers and looking really healthy. Famous last words I'm sure...it's probably listening to me now...plotting to die somehow when I least expect it lol.
