A part of my raised beds is netted and has cabbages and stuff in. The more mature plants seem unaffected but the chard seedlings which are still quite small keep getting messed around with and partly dug up time after time. The damage looks typical of blackbirds litter picking to find a meal but obviously with the net firmly in place it is not them. I've never had this problem before, though I think the soil is much more friable this year as I added a lot of manure the last little while which makes the soil very diggable for creatures.
Never had this problem before, not seen any likely creatures. Anyone have any ideas?

    Thanks
    GG

Are you sure it's not blackbirds, GG? I used to have a sweet cherry tree in a fruit cage and caught the birds bouncing up and down on the top, taking a chunk out of the fruits on each downstroke! They're canny.....
The only other culprits I can think of would be toads or big beetles:scratch:

How big is the netting? A mouse can go through anything its head will fit through - and mouse heads are small, about as big as your finger tip. Same for shrews.

      Thanks both.
@noisette47 I think perhaps you might be right as the netting is a bit lax and low, so I will bring on the reinforcements today and see if that helps.
@colne the mesh size it medium but you may be right, big enough for mice, though I have never seen any in my garden before.
Will readjust netting to make it more substantial today and see what happens. Don't suppose however it will be long before the enviromesh is necessary.

      Cheers

It might be Blackbirds. A few years ago I had a raised bed with Strawberries in, covered with netting, but not really secured. I noticed quite a few damaged fruit, and wondered what was doing the damage. Anyway, one day I went down the garden to find a Blackbird caught in the netting. They're determined little beggars:biggrin:

Blackbirds it is. Caught the little beggars in the act, actually pulling up a part of the side netting that was not fastened down. Would you Adam n Eve it?!!!?

Yes, and I expect the blackbirds gave you a very noisy telling off for disturbing them.
