    Hi all,

Hope the bank holiday weekend has been productive!

Quick question - I need to plug the gaps in a Beech hedge and have just been offered a few 40cm saplings but I'm dubious as to whether it's too late in the year to plant them out.

    Any ideas??

    Cheers in advance!
    Paul.

I think you'd be all right. Not idea, but provided you can water twice a week, more in drought, during the Summer I expect they will be OK.

Are we talking bare root saplings, or cell/pot grown?

I think its too late for bare root. Everything is well and truly awake up here, and has been for a few weeks now. That said, if you've been offered them for nothing, then you've got nothing to lose by trying.

They should be ok if watered well, I have just been planting some in a charity garden and they seem ok and if they are free go for it

Cheers guys ... theyre bare root. My existing beech hedge has literally only just sent forth a few green leaves, and the rest are all still wrapped up and brown so I have everything crossed. Hoping a good soaking 2-3 times a week will see them through!!

@Spruce got them from a neighbouring farmer. He kept the saps in sand and they're starting to bud. Will collect them tonight hopefully. I hope they'll survive.

Presumably you are on light land? (Beech hate heavy ground / clay etc.)

            Hi Kristen,

Yes it's fairly light. Very little clay where we are.

I would go for it, just don't let them dry out...

should be fine , just dont let them dry out as you are planting best in a bucket of water as you put them in , I have always found Beech tricky to grow, some do well and start growing quickly others just sit and do nothing for two years then decide to grow or not !!!

Get some liquid rooting hormone and add it to the water in the bucket you are planting from.. ;)
