    Bonjour all,

    hopefully a quick question

I have an area on my allotment in which i will be growing brassicas under netting. This will be my first ever time at growing this type of veg. Can anyone please help with the order of where to plant the following:

    Caulies
    Cabbage
    Purple Sprouting Broccoli
    swede
    turnip
    sprouts

eg. caulies front row, cabbage second row ...

The plot is south facing with no shade at all.

The Caulies and Cabbages are already about 3-4 inches tall in pots and will need transplanting down there soon. The turnip and swede will be started in drills direct. The broccoli and sprouts will be started off either tonight or tomorrow

    Any help is really appreciated

Apart from Turnips and Swedes they all need a lot of space (2'6" even maybe?) so not sure shading will be an issue, as such, but Sprouting will probably be tallest, then Sprouts, then Caulies / Cabbages, then Swede then Turnip shortest.

    Hiya.
I really don't think it makes any difference what you plant where in this situation.

My allotment is very similar. Last year I put the Purple Sprouting at the back, then my Sprouts, the cabbage and cauliflowers at the front. You could put the cauliflowers between the purple sprouting and cauliflowers as they do like a bit of shade from the mid day sunhowever your brassicas will probably not have grown sufficiently to offer this so if we do (please please) have a scorching summer then consider poping in some hedge trimmings to create a screen to give dappled shade.
Either way, good luck with it

    Thanks guys

yeh it sounds like a similar situation to you Andrew

yeh thats what i have been worried about, i have read on the packet that the caulies and swede like a bit of shade. I like the idea of putting up a screen of hedge trimmings to create a bit of shade!

Personally, I never bother with cauli's, too much like hard work to get a decent one, and they all seem to come at once:doh:

I thought that until I grew a variety that covers its curd with its own leaves ("Candid Charm F1"). Has grown faultlessly for me over half a dozen years since I first switched to that variety. Not sure it needs shade even (I grow it in full sun, but only coz that's where my veg bed is)

I start them off in pots ('though I start all my veg off that way), and I sow 4 or 5 pots each fortnight (1st and 15th of month, easier to remember). We eat about 2 Cauli's a week, and they "stand", once ready, only a week or two, so that seems to work out about right.

Ahh thats interesting to know Kristen.

I was bought a packet of seeds from a lady at work. It was one of those 6-in-1 jobs from B&M that contained a packet of caulies.

I'll be giving these a try this year and see how i get on. I'll cover over the middle bit with the leaves and see what happens.

If these are a disaster then i'll have a look into Candid Charm F1

As far as I know, Cauli's don't like to be 'checked', so water well:)
