I like to think that I am a fairly tolerant and understanding individual - I don't really care whether someone is black, blue, white, pink catholic, muslim protestant, male, female, gay, straight............ basically, it makes no odds to me what or who anyone is, as long as they are decent human beings.

However, I have to be honest, for some reason the winner of last night's Euorvision for some reason doesn't sit well with me - - - or at least, not comfortably. Thing is, I really cannot work out why.

I am not bothered by people who are transexual, nor am I bothered by those who wish to cross-dress; at the end of the day, what they choose to do with their lives is up to them. Yet still there is something about last night's show that left me feeling uncomfortable - am I alone?

I'm with you @fat controller on this one , it's just weird but the uk gave him/her 12 points.
Didn't a cross gender contestant win it the other year too from Israel??
Received a few funny jokes best not put them hear but this is a good one if you follow the rugby.

Yey He's won Eurovision well done Sébastien Chabal but your French not Austrian?! ...... ok shhhhhh

I agree. It was just weird.

If someone wants to be transgender, that's their choice, but why leave the facial hair on? I think if he wants to be a woman, then look like a woman. If you wanted to keep the designer facial hair, stay a man.

But then, I'm also aware that I might be thinking that because its human nature to be suspicious of what we find strange, and strange = new. We're all more tolerant of people of different skin colour and belief etc these days because we're all more familiar with all that than used to be the case years ago. If it wasn't the first time we'd seen a transgender person with a full set of designer face, maybe it would be less creepy.

Is he actually transgender or a drag 'queen'? As I've seen him described as that a few times.

I thought it was just drag. He wouldn't have such a good beard if he'd been through reassignment therapy, surely?

Yes, it was weird. He certainly had the coy simpering down to a fine art. I thought he was given votes as a poke in the eye to Putin who had just delivered a diatribe on what spiritual decadence and moral decay a cock in a frock represented. Given provocation like that, what was Europe to do?

The best laugh was the French presenter refusing to speak English and babbling on for hours before giving her votes. Classic - remember Agincourt?

That would probably be in revenge for all the Brits over here who refuse to even attempt to speak the language of the country they chose to live in and expect the French to speak English for their benefit:whistle:

I noticed, during that torrent of Francais, null point on the scoreboard. :mute:

@Madahhlia: 'cock in a frock' :loll: ...:roflol: And you're quite right IMO.

MrK and I never miss Eurovision. It's a spectacle. Perfect venue for this year's winner.
My feeling is that the character of Conchita is calculated to induce discomfort. This would weary me if I chose to allow it. The patience of the tolerant seems to be valued less than, or taken for granted in favour of, any opportunity to aggravate the intolerant -- who aren't going to change their attitudes anyway.

Winning song lyrics made a false distinction between 'vengeance' and 'retribution'... people who want peace and freedom skip that stuff IMO. But then it's all good fun, isn't it. :coffee:

At least one person (but it looked like only one) hadn't forgotten that! Hope France win soon (won't be very soon if Saturday was anything to go by) so we can enjoy the spectacle of France wiping the floor linguistically with the Royaume Uni. That'd be a laugh, or it would be if us Brits could understand any of it.

No, I think they have got a good case if they resent the anglocentric English and their pathetic inability or unwillingness to learn other people's languages, although I'm not sure if the French have much of a reputation for being linguists. I just found the French lady's haughty and dogged refusal to toe the line somewhat amusing but I don't blame her. Also, it was funny to see national sensitivities being played out so effectively for our entertainment. She might as well have been wearing a t shirt saying 'I spit on les Anglais and their tres ugly langue'. I haven't watched the show for years and I really enjoyed it - but I only saw the voting, possibly the best bit.

It would be interesting to see how the French would handle it if they were hosting. I seem to remember from years ago that the ESC was much more multilingual, ("Royaume Uni, Nul points" as the catchphrase has it!) On Saturday everyone seemed willing to cave in to English dominance.
