The best Veg to grow (particularly for a Newbie) are:
    • Ones you like to eat - don't grow anything you haven;t tried eating / don't like until you have more experience.
    • Ones that are expensive in the shops - Runner beans are a good example (and they produce loads of "crop"), and soft fruit (Strawberries / Raspberries) expensive in the shops because of the time it takes to pick them. But you can't grow them from seed
    • Varieties that have outstanding flavour - things you just cannot buy in the shops, orf things that don't "keep" well; Sweetcorn is a good example of that, it tastes fantastic if you pick it and get it into the pan and cooking within a couple of minutes of picking. What you buy in the shops has taken a couple of days travelling before it gets to you ...

Don't bother to grow things like Main Crop potatoes (initially). Very cheap to buy, and Farmers have special cold storage and can keep them much better than you can. New Potatoes, on the other hand, taste fantastic picked straight from the garden, and are expensive(ish) in the shops.
