OK, that I can understand. But Heuchra is a good plant in its own right ... it ain't exclusively Dim's plant :)

But I dunno if that helps? :)

I expect you can find him in an conspiracy theory forum ... better that such things are discussed there, than here, I reckon :)

Oh I don't want to go hunting for him, occasional conspiracy theory was fun in the off-topic section particularly as I often agreed with him!!!!:th scifD36:

I agree with you and I may consider them in the future but being in a betwixt and between situation regarding house hunting at the moment I'm loathe to spend any more cash on a garden I will be leaving at some point. I'm also not a lover of growing things in pots.....apart from tomatoes. :)

I have about 17 Heuchera/Heucherellas and give them a fortnightly feed of Miracle Grow (if I remember). Mine are all in the ground and most grow well in the poor sandy soil.
Latest purchase was today, Melting Fire. Weevil was the problem for me this winter too.

Sorry if I am sort of gate-crashing here, but are heucheras fairly easy to grow and keep? Do they need any protection through winter? And can they be propagated to increase their number?

As much as I like them I personally wouldn't describe them as easy to keep, well certainly not here anyway, they are kind of a challenge. They don't mind the cold but too much heavy rain makes them look a bit sorry for themselves!!! I think you propagate by division. Try a couple and see how you get on with them, lots of water in the first year and not too much hot sun.

                :sign0016: Hi FC

They require well drained soil but moisture retentive so a good mix of well rotted manure before planting worked into the soil helps as they have quite fine roots and this helps them get away to a good start, a sunny or half shaded spot depending on the variety as some don't like the mid - day sun on the leaves and may scorch , the easy ones's to start with are the deep purple varieties and usually tough and can be left outside all year.

Easy to propagate and really tiny pieces of stem less than a inch will root but has to be well drained gritty compost don't let the cutting sit in soggy multi purpose as they will just rot.

I grow in pots and use them to infill in the borders when needed and have a selection sitting around the base of my two standard bay trees.

                Hope this helps

                Spruce

Thanks for the link @Val - I think your bet is a really safe one; showing me those is a bit like showing a child chocolate really :snork:; however, we should not be encouraging gambling, so no bets can be accepted*

                      * not least because I have just ordered three jumbo plugs from Amazon
