But is it? And what is it, before I go ripping it out? (the one with the lighter green leaves and woody stems to the bottom right)

Is there a wild plum or a sloe tree growing anywhere nearby? Looks like it could be a sucker from something like that.

Not that I am aware of - there are a few trees in adjacent gardens, but none are fruit bearing as far as I know.

I would be inclined to let it grow. It does look like a very interesting plant. Also what looks like a Lupine next to it does not seem to be affected by it.

Sometime some of most interesting plants in your garden are the ones you were not expecting :)

My lupins are pretty rubbish this year to be honest but its their first year blooming, so hopefully future years will be better. I'll leave it for a wee while at least, and see what it comes to.

I did plant a couple of peonies last year, but am at a loss as to where I put them or if they survived - it wouldn't be one of them would it?

looks like a plum or a damson sucker to me too - I have some that come up every year even though the parent plants next door were cut down years ago. If they didnt come up in the wrong place I would let them grow - I like damson wine..

Peonies have compound leaves, and those look like simple leaf forms. So I am guessing it is not them..

I'm tending to think suckers also, you can see in pic two where the new growth is coming from last years old stem.
I'd have a burrow around the base and see what kind of root its coming from.

If its a rootstock sucker it could look different to the tree that it is coming from, possibly in a neighbours garden.
Whatever, I'd do my best to get rid of it.
If it is a root sucker, then you could paint it with weedkiller.

I have some more of them in among the grass, or did have until I went over it with the lawnmower yesterday.

Is there any possibility that its been something that has been dormant in the soil? I am led to believe that this area was an orchard at one time or another. I can't make out any plum or damson trees in the neighbours gardens, but in reality I can't be sure - how far do suckers travel?

If it is a sucker, will it ever produce fruit?

If its a sucker from a fruit tree its hardly likely to grow any fruit worth picking.
It could be a hang over from an orchard, if so, probably a Prunus species, plum or cherry, but it will be the rootstock.
I get similar shoots from an old peach tree.

"Could it be a Dogwood sucker?

          Sorry not Cornus...dogwood.
Cornus has opposite leaves with just one exception.
          Leaves wrong for that one.

Fat controller...have a look for a tree stump in your garden or next door.
Suckers from a plum tree can go rather a long way before popping up.

I'll have a neb over the fences and see if I can see anything. I am tempted to give it at least this year to see if it turns into anything more recognisable before I haul it out - of course, that may well change once I finally get my finger out and start weeding and planting.
