Started having a few problems getting a connection, I did all the usual, cleaned computer, re-booted, re-booted router, still getting an intermittent connection, even checked my mouse settings. Troubleshooter, telling me it couldn`t connect to server, in frustration I rang my provider, 40 min phone call later, it was decided I had a router problem, I have had it since we moved here, Nov 2007, so getting a new router in 2-5 days, if I disappear my intermittent connection has failed me. :pcthwack:

Had that problem about 6 months ago and despite being informed it would be replaced FOC they took a DD for it but after having a go at them they reimbursed me. A couple of weeks ago my connection speed kept dropping to about 1/17th of the normal speed, at first I was told it was a line fault, then they told me it was the router and sent another new one, but it speeded back up the day before it arrived. I don't think the operatives at the call centres know what they're doing.

P.S. If you're with BT beware their couriers dumping routers on your doorstep without even ringing the bell - they've done that twice.

I once had a router failure at the same time as my laptop went mad, losing its Wifi driver. That was fun trying to diagnose, as I couldn't pin the fault down to any one single thing. I set my phone as a mobile wifi hotspot, and found sometimes my laptop would connect to it and sometimes it wouldn't, which pointed the finger at the laptop. But then sometimes my phone would connect to the router and sometimes it wouldn't, which pointed the finger at the router. Of course there was also the possibility that my phone was also playing up, but I decided three items failing at once was just too much of a coincidence, but just to check it, I went to my mam's, and found my phone would consistently connect to my mam's router.

It was quite embarrassing when I realised, after telling the bloke at the call centre, it is definitely the router, I am certain, then the intermittent problem was still there with the new router at first. That is until I found that my phone would reliably and consistently connect to the new one but not the old one. The laptop's wifi driver issue was resolved by rolling back Windows 7 to the last restore point. It seems Microsoft pushed out a driver update that smashed my wireless driver.

I am on Virgin broadband , with a modem about 6 years old and my own router connected to this . I presume the routers you are changing are combined router/modems these days ? My modem has started to hang up every now and then , but Virgin say they cant detect a problem at their end.

I've had the same problems recently Pamsdish. Other half and I went through everything then contacted our telephone company, they said to change the channel on it and we've not had the problem since. Our router is getting on a bit and I'm wondering whether it's getting a bit cranky which is why we needed to change the channel.

I am with a long term customer of Orange / EE and often get disconnect such as when the kids come home from school and the lines are busy . Sometimes closing Windows Live Mail and reopening it solves the problem. It could be due to Orange not paying BT for enough space, or just BT mucking about.

Beware of your phone plugs becoming dirty, so push them in and our a couple of times. Also remember BT are not responsible for any damage to you PC etc due to lightening striking their lines. So unplug your phone line to the router during a thunder storm even if you are supposed to have surge protection.

The boffins claim routers should be left on all the time to get the best speed for you. But I do not risk it, they can get quite warm at times.

So am I, this is the second problem they have had to sort with router, hence the new one. Once I had it sorted it works well, remember to update phone wi-fi and kindle.
I have noticed a drop in speed noticeable at 3-30 pm coincides with school out, I don`t turn mine off and never had a problem.
