I read somewhere that in Britain we get more tornados than most parts of the world, but ours rarely cause a problem because they are usually brief and comparatively weak compared to the infamous ones that wipe out great chunks of America.

One struck a few miles from me a few years ago when I was living down in Hampshire. I lived in Boredom, just near Farnham along with about half the people I worked with (living in the same town I mean). The other half of my colleagues lived around Alton, and our work was sort of half way between the two. I went in to work the next morning totally oblivious to the fact that anything had even happened, as there was not so much as a loose leaf off a tree, but half my colleagues weren't in. All the ones from the Alton side. Turns out a tornado had struck through the night and scatter some local woods, mature trees, all over the main road, thus blocking the route in.

I was working in Birmingham July 2005 . I was walking across the workshop when I looked through an open door out into the street . I saw a rather dark cloud passing with lots of debris swirling round in it at quite some speed, about 100 yards away . Strange I thought ? It was a blooming tornado , one of the largest to ever hit the UK !
Luckily no one was seriously hurt , but it did remove a few roofs and turn some cars over.
