Discovered one of the established wisteria is REALLY struggling. It started budding (leaf buds) but the few leaves that started unfurling look to be rotted? It's planted against the house wall and a good 3' off the ground due to that part of the house not being on the same level as the older bit so I don't think it's bogged at the roots, but I'm never 100% sure. Any ideas/theories very welcome!

how old is it , sound as if the soil to wet over the winter as it has come into growth and now its dying , have a look at the main stem close to the soil.

I don't know how old it is, it was well-established 18 months ago when we moved in. It's grown up to the gutter (single-storey), across the door & window and beyond so i'd say a good few years. I'll have a look at the main stem tomorrow. If it is too wet, is there anything I can do?

such a shame, not a lot you can do , it may re- shoot but that may happen in months not weeks so I would leave alone and no pruning.

What type of soil as sound like heavy clay , but saying that in may be the grafted area that you have a problem with and this can happens even on a older plant

To be honest I couldn't tell you what type soil it is, it's got pebbles over it, and I've not looked. The soil in the garden, rockery etc is lovely and dark, not clay, but we're surrounded by limestone, I don't know what effect that'll have? I'll take a couple of photos tomorrow and post them

I will keep a eye out tomorrow , but don't prune for now as the branches still on even though not looking good will still help in pulling the sap through so you never know.

One of mine gave the ghost up and planted at the same time and about 10 feet apart same soil etc sunshine the other one romped away :dunno:

The sticking point for me is it's planted in a 6" square area in a slabbed patio, so if it needs coming out, there'll be little space if I don't get most of the root out. I'll leave be, and see how we go :)

The ground didn't feel any wetter than normal but there isn't really much space. Could the gravel be affecting it?

I don't want to jinx it, but there does seem to be some activity... There are a few buds that I'm sure weren't there a week or so ago...

Ellen dont want to spoil the party but it may be the sap that was already in the plant.
              Such a shame ...

I know some one in work who has the same problem as you he is giving it two more weeks and the whole thing that covers the front of the house is coming down

Still green under the bark (if you scrape a bit off with your fingernail)?

Early Spring mild, and then cold? Could have set it back. They can take until July before they come into leaf (although I wouldn't expect that for a mature plant)
