Any one else getting emotional watching the T.V. coverage :cry3:, I was born in 1950 so World War 2 was well over, but just wondering how others are feeling.

I haven't seen any telly coverage - I've read a little about it, the personal stories of the men who actually took part I find fascinating and we have our own family connection.

My Father in Law was in the first wave of soldiers to land on Gold beach on the day, only the frogmen had preceded and they had all been killed. His job was to clear the beach of mines but it was such terrible chaos all he could do was mark out safe lanes - there was no time to use the mine sweepers under fire. All his officers were picked off one by one to add to the chaos. It wasn't just a few hours on 6th June, he was in the front line fighting night and day for a couple of weeks before he was badly injured by an anti-personnel mine. There's a lot more to his story than this, he only ever gives away a little snippet every now and then.

It's difficult to imagine the carnage or how he got through, he only ever talks about it to me or the grandsons - never to his own son or daughter (Mrs JWK).

He's still around, a sprightly 93 year old but he has no interest in watching or reading about these 'celebrations'.

We can only imagine the trauma suffered by these brave men, and of course everyone who served during those dark days. We all owe a debt of everlasting gratitude to these men and women and must never let their sacrifices be forgotten.

That`s so true, I cannot remember my dad talking of the war (he was in Burma) and the older people I worked with throughout my working life 1965 onwards, some would just state baldly , I don`t want to talk about it.

My late Grandad was one of the first troops in to Normandy, as he was in the Parachute Regiment. Just wish he was still alive I would of taken him.
He hardly ever talked about what he saw and did.
When I joined the Paras he came and watched me at my passing out parade he said he was so proud of me.
We went around the airborne forces museum and there was a photo of my Grandad with his friends before D day only 3 survived.
He then went on to do Operation Market Garden at Arnhem in Holland, he was wounded and was a POW.
              Miss you Grandad.

Missed most of the sunshine this afternoon and kept Kleenex in business blubbing, listening and watching the D day coverage - the stories of bravery, courage and humanity are humbling.
Thanks to all our Grandads and Grandmas!

Been thinking about it all day, it's a big thing here in northern France, as you can imagine. So many young men who never came back. There are 3 buried in the cemetery in our village and they are only 20 and 21. As I said on another thread I think one of them died in my garden or house as there is a commemorative stone in my garden to him.

Radio 2 played a song today, for the occasion, that I've never heard before.

But, the moment I heard the opening lines, it threw me back to my mother talking about her work during the war ...

We watched it on the big screen at the cinema. Very moving and extremely well scripted and performed. What a fantastic performance of 'Stormy Weather'!
