"That's good news re the camera, but are associated skills innate? Will it come from practice or do I need to buy a book to learn? I'm keen but on a limited (unemployed) budget.
    Thanks Armandii."

It is a very good camera, MLB, with lots of "bells and whistles" on it and capable of taking great pics. The only "drawback" to it is that hasn't got the ability to shoot in RAW [which the digital equivalent of a film negative giving more resolution and ability to improve the pic]. Your camera shoots only in JPEG mode where you take a pic and the camera will process the image as it thinks it should be and a JPEG image is also able to be improve with software should it be needed. Also a JPEG pic is able to be uploaded/downloaded to Forums, computers etc via your computer while a RAW image is not. But let's not get too deep.
The soft early and late light of the day is always thought as being the ideal light to take pics of flowers although a dull day will also be good. Bright sunlight gives the colours too much contrast and harsh shadows.

It most certainly comes with practice.....and a little thinking. Anyone can take good pics if they give it some thought and understand what they're trying to achieve. You can take nearly as many pics as you like with digital cameras so when taking a shot, say, of a flower or insect put your camera into the mode where it will take several shots as you press the button. Your camera will take 7 shots per second in one go. The result of that is you will get at least one pic that you like the best.
For the time being, as you've only just got the camera, put it in automatic mode to get used to it and take a few pics of different things and look at the images to see if they came out as you thought/wanted them to.
If your camera came with a Manual have a read through it over time. Trying to read all of it in one go is guaranteed to make your brain go dead!! You could get a book on photography from a secondhand shop quite cheaply to give you the basics of photography if you want to delve into it.....but there's no rush. Practice with the camera [it is a fine camera] and think "Could I have taken that better, a different angle, see how peoples pics look and how they've taken them and learn from comparison.......I do!!! If you get stuck with anything you can always ask on this thread or pm me.

I was going to say to Woo and JWK, but got dragged away to answer a phone call, that I'd created this thread solely for Manthelifeboats [MLB:heehee:] so that she could ask questions. I had no idea that our some of our most experienced and talented members would cast an eye on this Thread but actually I'm glad they have as they know just as much as me about photography so hints and tips from them and anyone else for MLB would be appreciated:love30::snork:
