I've got 2 climbing roses up against a wall of the house, and a very tall bush next to a boundary wall. All 3 have black spot. I've sprayed today, with a synthetic treatment. I've tried to avoid open flowers but I must have sprayed some, and then a bee arrived :( I feel awful at the possibility I've harmed it!

I don't want to use pesticides. I've read an online blog where someone tried a milk/water solution, sprayed on infected roses once a week, and they were adamant it worked to kill off the infection. Does anyone here have any experience of this working? The last thing I want is to cause harm to bees!

Hi Ellen there is no cure for Black Spot my friend,no sprays or organic treatments the only method that works 100% is prevention,I have got black spot on several of my Roses,I remove the affected leaves every day and spray an old recipe on my rose's which works the best out of a bad bunch;)

i found that a vinegar and water solution i would say as a mixture of 2 parts water to 1 part vinegar helps and does not harm the bees :yahoo:

To make this spray, mix two tablespoons (30 mL) of cider vinegar in two quarts/litres of water. This spray should only be used in the morning or early evening, when it's cool and there's no direct light on the plant.

Does the vinegar spray also treat rust on the leaves?

Most grateful for the link wiseowl, I'll give equal parts of mouth wash a try. On one side of the garden a rose bush is affected with blackspot and rust. I started to pick off the affected leaves when it wasn't too bad, but it rather spread too fast .
On the opposite side of the garden, my roses are clean, healthy and disease free, which is good but puzzling why the other side suffered badly.

I did spray my roses earlier in May with a pesticide spray before the buds started coming out, but I looks I may have been too late for the one that caught the blackspot. I don't like using pesticide but it was an emergency measure.

I still swear by 4 weekly doses of well rotted manure around my Roses..never got black spot ,maybe I've been lucky but I haven't been as on the ball as previous years so now suffering the consequences ...still doesn't take the shine off the blooms though:thumbsup:

(It could be that the Rose on the opposite side is getting entirely different conditions ie Sun,soil, shade, wind, rain,or its just more susceptible to Black Spot etc:smile:

Good afternoon Pianissimo You are most welcome,I respectfully suggest that I personally think May is a little late to spray, only my opinnion of course:smile:

My apologies my friend I'm still trying to grow up:heehee:

Loli That's the way to do it,yes that is very wise as it probably prevents the Black Spot spores laying in soil all winter:smile:
