This is what I've planted so far, looking for something exotic to grow over the fence, it is quite shady 20140601_151019.jpg

          Clematis armandii?

But I would be tempted to plant a few shrubs or small trees along the back/fence. Something to give the planting a bit of height.
          Maybe another bamboo?
          Or a Trchycarpus palm?

I already have a Trachelospermum jasminoides growing on our patio, also got 3 Clematis
armandii in other parts of the garden, looking for something a bit exotic and different, will be planting a couple more bamboos, thinking of getting a black one.

I have a Fatsia japonica in the opposite corner as that part gets a lot of shade.
                    Thanks for the ideas

Well done Ian. How about some Canna at the back, for height as Sirius says. My C. altensteinii (from seed last year and rhizome this year) is already up to 7 feet, including its pot. Its easy to overwinter as a rhizome.

I was thinking about getting a few Cannas, never grown them before, been looking on ebay at a couple but not sure of quality.
Can't seem to find any around were I live in the local garden centres or in the large diy stores

Having had to bin all mine a few years ago I would only consider introducing Canna from seed now (no offence to those who are growing Canna, but I just reckon that you can't be too careful).

I second/third only buying them from reputable Canna Nursery (most probably mail order) or seed.

If you want fancy striped ones then you'll need tubers. Otherwise seed will do :)

If you are looking for foliage and height rather than flowers, Canna altensteinii and C. tuerckheimii are both easy from seed and will grow to almost full height by the end of the season - though probably not if you start now.

The ones from seed are often the species and the flowers are not always that big. However a reasonable gamble from Jungle Seeds is "Indian Shot Large Hybrids Mixed". These should have the large hybrid flowers - but being seed, which doesn't come true from hybrids, they results will be variable and won't have cultivar names.
