Well, Kings Ransom is one of the oldest roses in the garden. It does suffer, but not badly, from Black Spot as do most older roses but it's blooms are magnificent I must admit. It is a plant that likes to be fed, I use Tomato Feed once a fortnight or so after an initial feed of "Miracle Gro" just as it's starting to show leaf growth.:snork:

Hi Penny Jane, I have planted over the years nine Climbers on the East bank of my wildlife pond, with a space of around 5' from the roses to the pond and they are against an 8' high trellis running along the bank for about 27'. So originally there was Alberic Barbier, Veilchenblau, Zephrine Drouhin, Gloire De Dijon, and two unnamed climbers but two years ago I got the urge to get some more climbers and, as I said, have added Bright Future, White Cloud, and Madame Alfred Carriere. I don't feed the roses as they are too close to the pond and I don't want excess nutrients leaking into the water. I do, however, prune them when needed and don't bother which is which I just prune them back into some semblance of order:heehee:

@Spruce & @wiseowl - it got butchered after a pathetic attempt at blooming last year. Is it a good idea to treat it like that annually?

My variegated Mock Orange (Philadelphus) that I grew from a cutting just 3 years ago is looking stunning, its smothered in flowers and emitting a delightful scent :)

Longk , don't realy know that much about roses but I have grown over the years more "ramblers" than any other type of rose , and I do what my mum taught me , the old canes that are (2 to 3 years old and less productive of flowers) which flowered this year would be cut out as soon as they finished flowering , and then the plant given a feed which with my mum was any old compost and horse muck. , new growth soon appears and is tied in.

So my understanding from your post because you gave it a good chopping down it produced the new canes that are more vigorous to produce the flower.

Its a old variety but stood the test of time

                        Woo what your thoughts ?
