I've got a William Shakespeare bush on it's way to me.

I have a planting plan that suggests planting the climber "Dublin Bay" near it.

As much as I like red roses I'm a bit worried it'll be too much red in a small area?

Does anyone have any good alternative suggestions to this rose?

The plan also asks for a Golden Shower rose across our small front garden which I will get. If not that though then I'll still get a yellow rose of some sort.

I have got both.I take it as william shakesphere 2000.. It is not true red a bit of purple / deep red . Dublin Bay is red to me . Some don't like two red together as they clash etc..
Penny Lane( pale pink/ cream )is very good climber in my garden.
Fall staff( can grow as climber) is almost same color as ws 2000 in my garden ..
Crown princess of magareta( apricot) is excellent ( rain & heat tolerant )
It totally depends on your taste ..

I think you'll find it's better to follow your own likes and heart, Natalie:dunno::wub2: as that will make your garden your very own.
Can I ask what direction your garden faces and where you're thinking of planting the climber?, as that will help the Gang to give you some advice on which rose might be suitable.

I agree with Miss JJ, two reds together are likely to clash. Pale pink or may be salmon pink would be a fairly good contrast. :)

Good morning Natalie Dublin Bay is among the top 5 climbers,a lovely Crimson Rose.My personal opinnion is that rose colours don't clash, some Rosarians go for scent some for the shape of the bloom, and colour,I have reds next to reds ,indeed I have Fragrant Cloud next to Royal William;) Because I love vibrant colours I have Orange nest to red next to blue, but then I have no taste:heehee: I just love all Roses:smile:

I have Fragrant Cloud next to Royal William;)

              Hello,

Thank you for your replies, some great suggestions.

My problem is I love all roses and I love all colours haha.

I suppose I need one that's not too much maintenance as I'm a beginner in all aspects of gardening.

Also it is to go on a dark brown 5ft tall fence which is north east positioned with the sun shining from south west onto it. Our soil is clay with new top soil and neutral.

I've seen a few mentions of a rose called Compassion during google searches, looks nice?

Also now wanting one to grow in a pot up the wall next to the front door! That gets sun all day long from the south east.

              Natalie

Wow wiseowl, that is gorgeous! It looks like it's got 3 colours on it? I like that it has a bit of yellow in there as it will tie in with the golden shower climber on the other fence.

I'm having that one for sure!! Now just to choose one to go around my door.

I think I might be getting the bug for roses.

if you're looking for free flowering, easy and reliable I have to agree Dublin Bay ticks the boxes.

If you don't like it , you can always give it away . Not a lot of things in life you can do trial and error without losing more than 15 quids ..
