I'm about to cut off all affected leaves, flowers etc on my roses. It'll be a pretty intense trim as there's so much black spot :( is it wise doing this now, as it will leave them quite bald

Hello Ellen scalping is not the word I would have chosen :heehee:now would Woo ask you to do anything that would harm your Roses;) of course he wouldn't :smile:I respectfully suggest that you just remove the leaves by gently holding each leaf between your thumb and finger and carefully removing the leaf that way,and then discard every affected leaf and the ones on the ground either by burning or in a black rubbish sack and disposing them that way,Black Spot is rarely fatal to Roses,New leaves will grow again, some Rosarians say wait until they fall off, that is not my view,I want to take them off before they hit the ground,Trust me Ellen;)

I know you wouldn't lead me astray @wiseowl :) I'll do as you suggest with nipping them off.
My non-climbing rose needs really cutting back as it's huge & woody but I guess I'll be better leaving that until spring?

@wiseowl this is my worst-hit rose. It's also very rambling & woody, and I'm not quite happy with it. It was like this when we moved here. There are new branches with no black spot. In your opinion, would I be ok to really cut this back, solving both the black spot and the untidy hugeness of it in one fell swoop? Hi Ellen is that the tall bush rose you have described in your first post:smile: Personally I wouldn't prune it now,a little tidy up may be ,if you prune it now your rose will lose a lot of its sap, This is the correct advice ;)

Ellen can it not wait until its dormant ,from here it looks really lovely, just like an old friend;) if your not happy with it then it is your rose to do with as you will,I could say that it will be alright, but I cannot guarantee that it,, I have been in your position and I have pruned and moved roses in the summer and they came back again, only when customer's were adamant that they wanted it done at any cost;)

Hope this has helped my friend:smile:

Thank you so much Woo :)
This is the tall bush, it's huge, especially compared to my vertically-challenged frame ;)

I'll wait until it's dormant and give it a bit more of a trim then. It's so affected by black spot though I'm afraid I'll make it a little bald in the meantime ;)

Hi Ellen balds alright but looking at your excellent photo if the affected leaves fall off on to ground, you will have quite a difficult task removing them all,you have some lovely new fresh canes there after you have removed some of the old and diseased canes

                    Are the canes the branches?
