How I wish I'd had my camera with me today. My other half was attending hospital for a minor op and the ward was on the second floor. While I was looking out of the 'Day' room window I spotted a House Martins nest up in the eaves, no more than twelve feet from me. The parents were busy flying backwards and forwards to feed three hungry mouths poking out of the nest. They were fully feathered and obviously close to leaving the nest. So frustrating!

That reminded me of these 2 snaps I took a couple of days ago. The 2nd photo was not so good because I was a bit taken by surprise since I was wondering whether the 1st one was a youngster or a parent.

Lovely pictures Hsuh! Their nest building abilities are amazing, have you ever tried to remove one? They set like concrete. :)

Grass snakes are harmless, Joolz, but the big ones can be a bit intimidating until you "sort out" if they really are a Grass snake and not an Adder!!!:hate-shocked::snork:

I usually come into contact with them when fishing in Rutland. I usually have to check first before sticking my hand into grass on the bank if I've dropped anything into it. They usually more afraid of us but if they're carrying eggs then they can be very defensive and more aggressive. I've more than once touched one and a rat or two when reaching down for something:hate-shocked::heehee:

Naah, I don't think so. I'm wary of snakes as you can only tell their "mood" by their body language and the way they move. We used to have to have a snake check every day including our living quarters when I was in Kenya. There were around 5 species [Green, Black Mambas, Boomslang, Cobra, Puff Adder]. I think it was the Boomslang that I worried about the most as it climbed trees and being green merged with foilage. The trouble was that they sometimes, when moving, slip off a bough and would drop out of nowhere. The Kenyans made a habit of not sitting under trees:snork:

Dad brought one of the nippers to "the food bowl" and he soon cottoned on
