A friend of mine killed a biker, just didn't see him. When he went to pick up his personal effects from the car, the wreck of the bike was with it, speedo stuck at 90mph.

I was frightened off of ever having my own motorbike after being a pillion passenger for over a month during the London bus strike of 1958.

From what I remember, the bus strike went on for seven weeks and I had to travel from North London into the City every day. I only travelled as pillion for four weeks (on my cousin's bike) until they brought out the private buses.

Permission was granted to "The Peoples' League For Defence Of Freedom" to run private buses. Originally they weren't allowed to charge any fares and we tipped the driver. Later on they were allowed to charge a nominal flat rate.

I see 'SLOW' road marking that appears to be badly positioned too close to the hazard, and being on the down slope might not be visible until virtually on top of it, perhaps the reason for the skid marks?

The SLOW road marking appears to be aimed at those travelling in the same direction as the biker, not those heading towards them.

Bit like the postal strike - when was that - mid 60's?

I got a couple of letters, at Skool, which a taxi firm co-ordinated, but one enterprising Wag who "guaranteed to get your letter there" waiting until the end of the strike and then stuck a stamp on them and posted them!!

I'm tending to think there are loads of recreational bikers these days, they probably drive a white van all the week.
If car drivers were to carry on in the same way at weekends, I'm sure the law would clamp down on them pretty hard, and quickly, and rightly so.

However, bikers do seem to be able to flout the rules of the road and mostly get away with it.

Afterall mostly plod cant catch them, and they know it.

West Bay is a mecca for bikers, most of them think 30mph is just a suggestion :rolleyespink:

And you should hear the speeds they go up the A35 when they leave, usually followed by an ambulance a few minutes later

Something else that really does not help is the thickness of the A-pillars in modern cars. I have actually completely lost sight of a motorcycle, obscured by my A-pillar, such is its thickness and angle; thankfully, I am switched on enough behind the wheel to be aware of this so know to triple check, but I can see how other motorists with with less experience or not as qualified get caught out.

Trouble is that most of the "Barry Boyz" are doing it 24/7 in their pimped up Corsas and Subarus:mad:

              That is so true.

Even if they did use it for nicking people it would only be the quickest (0 to 60 in 2.5 secs) and not the fastest (only does 155mph flat out, so a good supersport would outrun it). More gimmicks, less cop work again!

That car would be absolutely useless. By the time his pulled a rider up and got himself out of the car the biker would be off! The only vehicle that would catch a bike is another bike.

Guess what - the Plod around here have an unmarked Fireblade!! Stands out like a sore thumb if you know your bikes, but otherwise quite effective.

There was, almost certainly, another 'SLOW' sign further back. I liked the sign I saw in Ireland. There were two, successive, signs saying 'SLOW' on the road then, as we drove around the next bend there was a sign, right across the road surface, that said 'SLOWER'. :heehee:

The big strike was for seven weeks in 1971. I ran a free, local, postal service at work. People, and businesses, could drop mail into my place for others to pick up. I had an office at the back of my shop from which I ran a small mail order business (that stopped for the seven weeks) so had a system of boxes, similar to a post office sorting frame, already available.

We sorted the mail into street and business names and people came in to pick them up. It brought in extra customers for the shop and some of the businesses that used our service gave us some money. It was only a local drop off and collect service. :blue thumb:

Last weekend (it's always at the weekend) I pulled out onto an A-road (only one lane in each direction) where there was no oncoming traffic in sight. Within a few minutes there were 6 bikes behind me, one by one they passed me as we went through a 30mph village until only one bike remained behind. One mile out of the village there's a mini-roundabout. The 5 bikes all waited for the 6th and then came behind me again. I watched as all 6 overtook me and 5 other cars in front of me. They then pulled in to a layby on the other side of the road where there was already a group of other bikes and a snack caravan. This week I measured the distance between the roundabout and the layby - just under a mile!

I too know somone involved in a fatal accident involving a bike overtaking on a blind section of the road, my friend didn't drive for over a year after and it wasn't his fault, he was just a witness.

I do not understand why weekend bikers do this, they are not only dangerous on the road but they give such a bad name to other bikers.
