This is the thing that really gets to me - its every message louder than the one before, and the one before not making much sense either. The 'thou shalt not' brigade have become more and more listened to (whether they are right or wrong) and as a result they are pushing things that are more and more idealistic - utopian even.

The bit that they are missing is that human nature and mother nature have completely different ideas. We are all going to die someday, and most of us will suffer illnesses as we age.

Not so long ago, if you lived into your mid-seventies, you were doing well - nowadays, we are increasingly seeing people into their 80's and 90's, therefore it stands to reason that we will be seeing an increase in illnesses and diseases purely as a result of our ageing population. Perhaps this is mother natures way of keeping things in check?

I know one thing for sure - I am never likely to be able to afford to buy my own home thanks to the vast deposits that are required; nor can I afford a really good pension package - not that one would be any good to me anyway, as I would lose the bulk of it to pay a private landlord an extortionate amount of rent, and the retirement age is ever increasing too. Seems to me that an early death is all I have to look forward to!

    Bring on those doughnuts!

I also believe in many cases people are living longer due to modern medicine which IMO under certain circumstances I personally would rather go down the quality of life rather than quantity route..:blue thumb:

Just think I should point out that lots of healthy foods are really delicious and tasty, whereas lots of unhealthy foods are actually not very nice at all. A cheese and onion wholemeal sandwich v. Ginsters 'cheese and onion' pasty, for example or a ripe juicy peach v. a piece of cheap swiss roll.
None of us have any choice over that, we are in the lap of the gods, but we can stack the odds against having years of poor health prior to a premature death. I don't know why anyone would put up with that when it was in their own hands to prevent it.

Good Lord, the last thing we need is another cookery program. Although, I believe Jamie Oliver has already done one like this.

I try to keep our little Ted away from the TV, unfortunately he has already become quite keen on his Thomas the Tank Engine DVDs. As soon as he's home from the child minders he runs to the TV waiting for his DVD to come on but not anymore, it's under the arm for him and plonked in the garden with me (as I have a smoke and tin of pop, naturally). He has a tantrum as standard but he soon get's to kicking his ball about and getting all my tools out the shed and eating soil.

I think he must've had maybe 3 or 4 premade meals in his short 18 months on this planet, everything is cooked by Mrs F from scratch and frozen or he eats what we eat. If possible he'll eat what I've grown in the garden too, from 'plot to plate' in 5 minutes. We once went to a play centre and got him chips and pizza as a treat (naughty parent I know ) and he was having absolutely none of it. We whipped out his sandwich from his bag made from proper butter and proper bread with a banana and blueberries on the side and he was happy as Larry!

In short - it's the parents fault! :mute::mute::mute: Top tip: don't give your 2 year old Lucozade in a bottle to swig on. (I have actually seen this numerous times?!) :frown:

The trouble is that it doesn't happen that way! By ignoring the healthy items and eating the 'unhealthy' items you're likely to die younger but have lots of debilitating problems as well.

If it was a matter of enjoying yourself until you 'suddenly wake up dead', a lot of people would agree with the idea. It's more likely to be - enjoy yourself and get seriously ill younger!

It's better to eat healthily, with the occasional splurge :), and learn to make tasty, healthy meals.

I don't seem to have much problem with buying healthy items cheaply and having them in the fridge ready to use in tasty meals. I just bought a load of fruit and veg in Aldi, at a fraction of the cost of ready meals, and a large chicken that will make a number of healthy meals (alright, I know they've probably stuffed it with chemicals to get it to grow quicker but it's nowhere as many as the nasties they put in ready meals).

Four times two course dinners for the two of us for less than £15. All freshly made by my own delicate pinkies :blue thumb:

Lucozade was a major reason for me not spending more time in hospital as a child. Back then it was mainly given to hospital patients and I couldn't stand the stuff.

Yep, I love ryvita with very low fat cottage cheese, tomato, and spring onion, but I was trying to demonstrate a point. Much of the food that many people buy and consider as nice/crave are pies, crisps, biscuits, cakes, ice cream and chocolate, and although eaten in moderation are ok, I am afraid many aren't eaten in that way.
I know because I was once one of the offenders (mainly through ignorance) and have recently paid the price for it.
I never mentioned it in my health scare thread, but I actually had a heart attack. I am now off for 6 weeks and a months driving ban.

I agree with you @shiney one. Is the importance of eating healthily highlighted to our youth (in schools).
Especially your point about maybe not just waking up dead, and suffering before that day.
Plus what trans and saturated fats actually do to our bodies, plus other nasties.
I went shopping today but held back on buying some items (chicken for example) until I can get some recipes for making my own meals. I can then buy the relevant ingredients at the same time.
I have 6 weeks off, so no excuses for not having a crack.
I am getting there slowly, but things keep happening that hamper my efforts.

Lucozade has some frightening ingredients. 25% glucose syrup and some E number colourings that are known to cause HDHD in children. Lucozade Sport has considerably less sugar but it's replaced by aspartame! :yikes:

The company was sold by GSK last year and is now owned by a Japanese company.

Although you can always buy chicken portions, of varying sorts, it's so much cheaper to buy a whole chicken and cut it yourself. It's not difficult

I don't do it quite like that but the video is pretty good. I take the breasts off the bone to cut them and use them in stir fries or quick casseroles or curries. The carcass then gets used for a nice healthy chicken soup. :blue thumb:

If you're still finding it difficult to successfully make meals, after experimenting, then once you are able to drive again you're welcome to pop down for some cookery lessons from me :dbgrtmb:. I have some days when I do a lot of cooking for the freezer. :)

Does hdhd mean that they are really clear to look at? :heehee:
I hate sweeteners and avoid them where possible. It reduces my choice in what I can buy, but so be it. For one, they have a chemical like taste....yuk.
My ex wife and stepson didn't believe I could tell the difference, so they tested me on some drinks, and I got it right everytime.

I have mentioned that I follow a low carb high fat paleo type diet before. Well, as a result of hard work with it, combined with lots of walking, gardening, etc. I have now managed to get off my fast acting insulin injections and now only inject the "background" slow acting insulin. That is three/four less injections a day and my blood sugar levels are now in the normal range. :hapfeet::hapydancsmil::yahoo: And all because I eat the kind of foods our cave dwelling ancestors probably ate.
I know it won't last and I will eventually have to go back to the old regime of fast and slow acting insulins because diabetes is progressive but I am thoroughly enjoying it while it lasts! :)
