I might have a go at a description if I understood what you were getting at.

If you type a rude word it is replaced (on display) with something that does not offend. The "Profanity Filter" does this. Being dyslexic I have difficulty understanding the text with (often humorous, but invariable cryptic) substitutions. This allows folk, like me (are there any?!!) to see the original text without substitutions.

Whoops! I posted that at the same time as your post, Kristen. I now understand what you're getting at.

      A slight alteration

By default, profanity is filtered and replaced with alternative text. By enabling this option, you will see the original text without substitution.
Other members will not see any original profane text unless they have also ticked the box.

I have added a comma (in red) to your wording and thought a further explanation might help.

The danger is that people will now feel more free to use profanity (getting more substitutions) but this is partially offset by the fact that members will only see it if they have agreed to it.

Well done all three of you. Even I have understood it now and ticked my own personal profanity enablement box,
        :ThankYou:

I would suggest spelling it out a bit more, with an explanation of what profanities are, explicitly pointing out that by selecting this option Users accept that bad language, strong language, foul language, bad words, vulgar, swearing, cursing, cussing, or using expletives will appear unedited in posts.

And I've checked the tick box so I'll now know exactly what Moo Poo means.

I don't think it is necessary (and a lengthy description would overload the whole Preferences page - although it might be possible to do a Pop Up (i) help thingie).

Folk would have to get to the Preferences page and then deliberately override the Profanity filter, and then be offended by the contents they read - which also assumes that people here will actually post offensive effing and blinding content, which I rather doubt. A Troll on a mission might, but the MODs would probably Ban and Delete in such an instance??

I agree. The MODS should still be looking for unnecessarily profane terms and suggest/warn the culprit that GC doesn't allow swearing for swearing's sake.

Also GC shouldn't allow directly aimed aggressive swearing. e.g. you shouldn't be allowed to be intentionally rude and profane to another member as it's our policy to be able to disagree whilst still being polite.

Whoops! I seem to have cut out almost all swearing :heehee:. So, swearing should be allowed to emphasise a point but not have it directly aimed at a person.

I saw a bad word earlier. Thought "Blinking heck, how did that get through the profanity filter?" and then realised that I had it disabled

A quick google site search appeared to indicate that most use of moo poo is actually those very words and not a substititution.

P.S. At first glance I read "profane" as what's in the cylinders I use for greenhouse heating.

I tried to post a humorous, or so I thought!, reply in another thread containing the name of a drug that made Pfizer a fortune, and I got the message:

              "Content contains banned word: vixxxx"

and that prevented me from posting at all. I didn't know that that feature existed ... would it be worth widening that to include the more serious profanity words? i.e. to discourage posters from using them at all.

Of course it might just encourage people to substitute letters to work around it, but my personal view is that the Board would be enhanced by getting people not to use foul language in the first place. Might just be that I am getting old, but I have moderated how I write in public and now use phrases like "Blinking hard work" which I think conveys the meaning without needing to resort to even mildly rude language.

The "content banned" message could perhaps be changed to indicate that attempting to work around it would be treated as a serious offence?

Right: I can tick off "Changing the world" on my ToDo list for today :heehee:
