Thank you Pete, just looked it up on wiki. I'll try and contact the grower of the seed to see if it's a genetic thing. Thanks again.

Hi, I have grown my ghost rider pumpkin in our pop up greenhouse last year and it grew beautifully. So far year its been growing well and is well established with lots of male and female flowers flowering. However I have self pollinated 3 times now and two of the pumpkins that developed have aborted so I have cut them off. I have also noticed that the flowers that have flowered and closed go mouldy and soggy, i don't remember that last year and so is this normal? Also I went into the greenhouse this morning and the big top leaves had turned a bright yellow! Does anyone know what that means? I water well everyday and I put some blood, fish and bone on the top of the soil a few weeks ago. I still have one small surviving baby and I'm hoping it keeps.

Hi @gill75 - I always struggle getting pumpkins pollinated too. The plants seem to produce all males one week then all females the next. Then the first few pollinated fruit abort like you say. You just have to persevere - there's plenty of time left for the growing season, eventually you will get some to properly set and grow.

The flowers going mouldy/soggy after they have done their work is normal.

I'm not sure which leaves you mean by the "big top leaves" turning yellow. Quite often the first few leaves on the vine closest to the root will wither and die off, but new growth leaves shouldn't be doing that now. They need plenty of water but on the other hand they won't like being water-logged. Have you got them in the soil or in a container? If in a container/grow-bag check if the compost is really soggy and if so ease up on the watering.

Yes it does like over-watering - are there drainage holes in that container?

Maybe lifting the pot off the ground will help, raise it up on a couple of pieces of wood. And when watering pots, remember this "1 inch of water goes 9 inches down". That will help you time and again with watering.

I've harvested my two accidental pumpkins i.e. I didn't buy pumpkins but that's what they turned into. They aren't ripe yet but have grown to their full size (25cm tall) and were sucking up water and nutrients that my courgettes could use.

They are sat on a fairly sunny windowsill ripening.

It looks more like a Marrow to me - what variety have you sown there?

It does doesn't it. It's a ghost rider, I grew them last year and they looked like that then too but definitely grew into a pumpkin in the end.
