A big big thank you to Mrs HG, who indulged me yesterday.

And a big thank you to Geoff Hamilton for giving us such lovely gardens. I think that the gardens would have looked a little better if there had been some rain a few days before, as lots of plants were looking a little thirsty. None the less, I thoroughly enjoyed the trip, and only an hour or so from home, I will definately be going again.

What a wonderful treat Steve! I had no idea Barnsdale was still being looked after and open to the pubic. Another one for the list thanks :)

I am of the understanding that his son Nick, has a lot to do with it these days. They still employ an army of gardeners too.

Whilst having a cupper, Mrs HG and I overheard a meeting where they were already planning for next year, some special events are going to happen.

It's not as perfect as Geoff had it, but it has also been an exceptional summer, and some of the plants need a bit of tlc, and a bit of weeding here and there.

Entry prices are fair, tea room prices on a par with most garden centres, but I did find the plants in the nursery a tad on the expensive side, although you will get varieties not usually seen in a normal gc, especially Hermeocrallis (day lilies) they must have a least 20 different flavours!

Thank you for sharing your birthday treat with me today HG. It will always hold memories for those of us who were inspired by that great but modest gardener Geoff Hamilton,

Great pics, Steve. It's a place I have visited quite a few times over the years and there is so much to see. I agree it perhaps has lost a tiny piece of Geoff''s original way of gardening but I guess a garden is continually evolving and is difficult to keep in the original form and I doubt if Geoff would have wanted to have done that anyway. But there are a lot of his tv projects still there such as his french boulevard, wild life pond, his little wooden hut that he jokingly compared to looking like a Portaloo!, plus all of the many different town garden themes, and the rose gardens etc. It is, for me, as inspirational as he was.
His laid back, talking to you as though you were family, style of presenting, just made you feel enthusiastic and wanting to go out and garden. He was also a thoughtful, practical, extremely knowledgeable gardener who thought quietly and with long term gardening in mind and how plants would continue to grow and change the garden whereas I'm afraid Alan Titmarsh [a very charming and affable presenter] with his quick rip out of plants and quick stuffing others back in again along with quick construction of "features" made a garden look good for the first year but after that you knew the owners of the garden just didn't have the knowledge or the physical capability to keep the garden as in the first year. Alan is a very clever presenter who has made a fortune out of TV, commercial franchises, an author of books [not all gardening], who is ambitious and has made his "mark". Geoff was a quiet man, a true gardener just wanting people to enjoy gardening and telling them simply and with a gentle style that made you feel he was "family" and he could genuinely give you that "feel good" feeling after watching one of his programs. I have all his books and videos which are just full of common sense practical ways of gardening.
So if you step out on the road this year, or any year, I would definitely recommend you let them take you to Barnsdale...............you won't regret it!!:coffee::snork:

Totally agree with everything you have said, I like Mr T, as you say he has an affable manner, but for pure down to earth neighbourly advice and tips then Geoff IS the go to gardener.

I remember as a youngster watching GW with my Grandad, he loved his garden and did a lot of what Geoff advised, and I could see that for myself. My Grandad was my hero, and so became Geoff, because if it was good enough for Grandad, it was good enough for me.

Thank you for the compliment on the photos, that is high praise from a great photographer such as yourself. I am pretty much point and click (only have a powershot a1400, and me phone), if it looks good on the screen then I snap it :heehee:

I have a little site survey to do on Friday, for my B-i-L, Ryton side of Coventry, let's see if I can persuade Mrs. HG to round of this holiday week with a visit to the Gardens there :love30:

Exactly ARMANDII...:dbgrtmb: In the spring I'd be outside gardening with the doors open waiting to hear the GW theme tune then it was down tools to go and watch and as soon as it was over I'd be straight back out there again. My Mum and Dad had gone to the coast for a few days holiday and I remember going there to see them ,it was the day Geoff had died.We were all stunned and subdued it really did feel like we'd lost a close friend:sad:...

Apologies Steve, the mere mention of Geoff sends me off on one:doh::thumbsup:
