I think every true gardener was effected by Geoff's death. He knew he had a "dicky" heart but insisted on doing a Charity Bike Ride around Rutland Waters which is right beside Barnsdale which turned out to be fatal. It sounds trite to say it but his death was a huge loss to the gardening world, and I'm sure he never thought that so many people would grieve for him. It's not a pun when I voice the thought that Geoff had more Heart than most people I have met.:love30:

See! I said only yesterday about the depth of your heart and here you are today, sharing precious memories with us, of your special day and of one of our most beloved gardening mentors!! Thank you: so, so much!

It never occurred to me that we could still visit his gardens - and, no matter what anyone does to them (or not), he is still at the heart of them: that much is still obvious! It is now on my bucket list

          :ThankYou: :star: :star: :star:

I think (just my opinion, having watched AT's gardening shows/read his books/columns) that AT was hugely influenced by our GH ;) How could he not have been? AT was presenting Pebble Mill and no doubt interviewed GH at some point or three (and yet, curiously, AT doesn't appear to have aged  Thought he looked "mature" then and he still does ) No more is that influence more starkly seen that that "Seaside" themed garden - AT has drawn inspiration from that on a number of occasions (as have many others - who are not TV presenters :heehee: ).

I was thinking more that he had one of those faces that looks old even when it is young? :dunno: Like Clement Freud? John Major?

No, rosietutu, I remember him well. I liked him and saw him on TV when I was a kid but he was very formal, jacket and tie, but very friendly and very knowledgeable. I did visit his Nursery a long time ago in Shrewsbury but he had passed away by then and to be honest I was very disappointed in the way it was being run.:dunno::snork:

Just read up on him it appears his garden centre was sold by his daughters who were hoping for a cash input to bring the place up to scratch it didn't happen and they have now got the sack... I remember when I lived in Anglesey 1950s the local gardeners club had a coach trip going to the Shrewsbury Flower show think he was the head gardener there, I was thrilled to meet him as were many others he had quite a following, immaculately dressed a gentleman from tip to toe. at the end of the show was rounded off by fireworks never forget it was such a lovely day.

Yep, does anyone remember Cyril Fletcher's Gardening hints on Capitol Radio in the 70's?
