Well yet another wobbly airbed failed this weekend , lowering my creaky old bones onto a rather hard ground !
Lots of people are using self inflating mattresses 7cm thick ( not the back packing type ) has anyone used these ? Are they OK for a couple of nights camping ?
I am looking at the Outwell or Vango at about £70 for a double , not cheap , but I don't want another airbed .

Maybe a B&B would be better?

Seriously though, I found that quality seems to vary massively among blow up mattresses - - like so many other things, you really do get what you pay for.

        No Carry on Camping then?!!

For overspill sleeping in-house we use Futons - bit bulky to carry on a hiking trip! In Japan the futons fold into three and go into a large wall cupboard during the day. Its a while since I have been there, but they didn't have the furniture-type with mattress-on-top that we have over here. I bought half a dozen on eBay over the years, and threw away the frame, and then we just stick those down on the floor dormitory-style when we have hoards staying, and then tri-fold them into a pile in the corner during the day to navigate around the room!

Well we used Karrimor double air mattress a very good make which lasted errrrrrr 3 nights , not a clue where I bought it from last year. Don't really want camp beds Loli as we take for too much stuff now . The self inflating mattress is similar to a futon but it folds up quite small I think. Vid below.

I have one of those rubberised cloth single mattresses which I've had for years and is extremely comfortable. I used to have a Thermarest which was good for back packing but nowhere near as comfortable as 4 inches of compressed air. Better than the cold hard ground, though.

All the ones I've seen are much narrower than single pump up airbeds, so if you roll about in the night you can keep ending up on cold ground.

If I bought another I'd consider a 10cm one and find the largest size possible.

Perhaps there is room for the invention of a self inflating airbed with hospital-style safety rails? That would stop the Girl Guides in the tent next door disturbing your good night's sleep too :heehee:

We would be getting a double , they are 130cm wide , nearly double mattress size. I'll order one next week , as we are off to Trearddur bay at the bank holiday for 3 nights - the maximum I will camp !
