Just had a thought regarding the greenhouse. Can you fit the glass from the inside only? I'm erecting it next to the shed so won't be able to the outside of that side. Wait, can I even put the greenhouse together from that side?!

      ...oh bum.

The pool of water that was around the willow.

Don't panic! My greenhouse has just six inches between it and my shed. I built the frame completely before moving it into position. You must do the glass on the shed side first, stand inside and start with the lower panes, leaning out to put the holding clips in. Work to the top and put the roof glass in last, again working from inside.

Usually the glass is held in by spring clips from the outside so you have a problem Houston.:dunno:

Thanks Sheal. When you say you built the whole frame and then moved it. Was that including the glass and how did you move it?

Oh, and regarding the pool of water. The neighbours have mentioned our gardens used to be the millpond for the mill further up the lane so when it rains heavy it does stay for a while, guessing it's quite close to the water table.

My old man has suggested raised that area with a few tonnes of topsoil and turfing it. Not sure what to think about that. Is there any alternatives?

Drains. Only real solution to wet. Sump and soakaway, and a pump in a "cavity" in the soakaway for when you actually need to pump out (so either a put-pump-in-and-turn-on blue-moon scenario, or just a sump-pump in there on a float switch that takes care of it as-and-when).

Pumping the water out of the soakaway and onto other parts of the garden for Summer irrigation might be a benefit - particularly if you are on a water meter and/or there is a spring of some sort so that it does actually collect water, even in the depth of a hot summer.

You can see how close it is now, a slim cat can just about squeeze through the gap, not that they're invited to do so! The greenhouse is 8x6ft.

With my son's assistance we built the whole frame then moved it without the glass in into position, we then loosened off all the bolts/screws to align it properly and once square tightened them. We then bolted the greenhouse to the concrete base.....a necessary evil here because of the weather. When I bought it I opted for toughened glass which is a lot heavier than horticultural glass, so heavy that we had to unload the crate one piece at a time because we couldn't shift it!
