    Hi Everyone,

I'm going to grow some fruit next year - the spuds were OK - but to be honest I was a tad disappointed with the yield.

I'm looking to container grow the fruit - anyone got any recommendations as to type of fruit, yield etc?

I fancy some strawberries - but have no idea as to which are the 'favoured' varieties - do I grow them from seed or buy plug plants :noidea:.

The night scented stock suggestion (when I joined) was spot on - their fragrance fills the whole area around the conservatory.

    Thanks.

Strawberries you usually buy runners of or plug plants. If you want a high yield then you will need a large container to put them in. I'm talking dustbin sizes. You could then drill lots of holes into the sides and plant through the holes.

Some people also plant them through pallet walls and things like that if space is limited.

Varieties I personally can't tell the difference personally. So I would just buy what you want or can find and then go from there.

Early Varieties (or Spuds grown in containers) have lower yields - I grow them for "early" when New Potatoes, like Jersey Royals, cost a lot in the Supermarkets, and fresh from the garden [not having to have travelled for two or three days to get to the shop, and then my kitchen!] are sweeter (the Sugar starts turning to Starch from the moment they are harvested)

If you want "volume" of potato crop you need to grow Main Crop, but ... they are likely to start sprouting in storage, and once stored will taste no better than the ones you can buy bulk from Farm Gate or similar ... only benefit of main crop, as I see it, is: Known provenance (no chemicals in my case) and preferred varieties (if you have a favourite that you cannot buy in the Supermarket)

Just to warn you though, you won't get a lot of strawberries from one pot. Unless you mean the tall ones. I got my MIL one for mothers day and I think they only got a couple of strawberries from it in the end.
