    Dear all,

I am in the process of trying to turn my mums garden of overgrown weeds into a garden in which she can enjoy.

I have tried using chemical weedkillers which have helped but there are still weeds growing back.

I was wondering if covering the weeds in the black weed membrane you can buy for a couple of months (or longer) would completely kill of the weeds allowing a blank canvas to start again? I am in no real rush, just want to kill off all of the weeds- there are no plants growing in these sections that are worth saving. or shall I keep going with the use of round up?

Any advice/ comments would really appreciated, as you can probably tell I have very little experience with gardening.

    thanks

    Bryan

Welcome to Gardeners Corner Bryan :sign0016:

Roundup only really works when the weeds are actively growing, most plants are slowing down now.

Covering will help, but you'll find things like Dandelions are still alive when you remove it. Best to dig those out completely, try not to leave any root in as a small bit will start a new plant :):psnp:

[IMG] Bryan, If you have weed killer'ed then I would say now is the time to start digging out all the roots that are left.. Never easy getting to grips with weeds, but once you start digging you will be amazed at the difference..

Also, new weeds will germinate from seeds left in the ground, so persistence is the key.

Post some close-up photos of the leaves of them? They may have grown from seed, if so nothing you can do about them but just chopping them down will kill them - more will then come ("One year's seed is seven years' weed" ). If they are pernicious perennial weeds then you will have to repeat the chemical warfare ...

You can cover with woven weed suppressing membrane, but you will have to plant through it ... covering it will kill the weeds, but the seeds will still be there for when you remove it and pernicious weeds will also return.
