    Hi Folks,
My family and I have recently movd into our new house and I am keen to get the garden into shape. But I have a couple of problems which I need help with.

I planted a hornbeam hedge in March this year but I am concerend with the yellowish colours on the leaves. Do i have a problem?

Additionally the grass is very yellow in areas as well and there are hundreds of white/grey slugs in it at nighttime.

Ive attached pictures and hope someone can help me.

    thanks
    Gerard

    Welcome to Gardeners Corner :sign0016:

Looks like it all needs a feed, is this a new build garden by any chance? :)

Thanks Zigs for both the welcome and the response.

You've hit the nail on the head with the new build. We sowed the lawn last easter 2013 but it was a particularlly dry couple of weeks and I was on holiday so it didnt get watered. I was thinking it might have got off to a bad start but I have perviously fed it with lawn fertiliser and it didnt seem to get much better.

    Also whats with the sulgs?

And what would i feed the hornbeam hedge with?

There's always slugs, they're probably feeding off the lawn cuttings.

You're probably planting into a poor soil, or even subsoil left by the builders.

You'll need to put a top dressing on, maybe spent mushroom compost, it'll encourage worms to help build up the soil structure and fertility :)

just didnt think there would be hundreds of slugs:noidea:

I was here when the builder put in the topsoil and there was a good 300mm. Maybe ill surface dress it anyway.

Any thoughs on the hedge Zig?

Arr, after you top dress it, give it a damn good soaking. Not just surface watering. Then make sure each plant gets 2 gallons a week, that'll encourage deeper roots, if it only gets a light watering then it'll put roots up near the surface.

Once it's established it'll need less looking after :)

    :sign0016: to Gardeners Corner Gerard,
Sprinkle Blood, fish and bone around the base over Winter. Let it work itself in - that will help,

    Thanks everyone. :ThankYou:

I guess the slugs are not such an issue as no-one has commented on them.

Anyone got any preferred fetilisers for the lawn?
